Mexican with a White fiancé dilemmas with music

Genesis, on September 19, 2018 at 7:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 14
Hey guys! I have recently gotten engaged and am starting to plan stuff out when I stumbled upon a dilemma. As a Mexican American I was brought up with tejano and accordion folk music (Mexicans will understand lol) and I am not a huge fan of it. I mean I don’t mind it but it’s not something I want to listen too much. My fiancé is white and sorta hates the accordion (most Mexican and tejano music has the accordion) not to mention a lot of my guest list doesn’t know much English. I was planning on getting some ranch style country music that was reminiscent of tejano or Mexican ranchero music and I wanted no vocals. I would just get someone to make a playlist and give it to a DJ but my mother insists on it being live and having Mexican music. I have a little less than half of my guest list that doesn’t know a lick of Spanish I need advice it will be greatly appreciated!!!

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to work on your compromise skills! You may want to consider the cocktail hour as peace offering to mom.

Sadly mother does not drink! (Mexican and religious is a deadly mix lol!) I’m trying the best I can, my fiancé has no other real wants than not having an accordion really. :/

Mom doesn’t have to drink during cocktail hour. This actually seems like the perfect compromise since you and FH will be taking photos so he won’t have to hear the accordions.

How about having a live band to play as part of your big exit? My fiancé and I really wanted to hire a mariachi (I’m hispanic), but we just couldn’t put it in our budget.

I was thinking about getting a friends bad to play coyote country with no lyrics and as we leave they could start singing?

I hear you. I'm Venezuelan/Colombian and we listen to salsa, merengue, bachata, etc., and my FH listens to old school country music, not even the stuff you hear on country radio today. I think maybe you should do a mix: American music and then have the mariachis come and serenade you. I want mariachis to do that, but i have no clue how to find a mariachi band in Rapid City, South Dakota. Good luck, i know the struggles of music. I can't even find a DJ familiar with "International music"

It sounds like a band wouldn't fit what you're looking for in music, since you and FH don't seem to be super into that particular style of music.

I think having a DJ play a mix of music, including the Mexican music would be the best way to go. It makes everyone happy, and playing more than one style of music is more fun in my opinion.

If you want to go the Dj route then you just need to explain that to mom. It is your wedding after all.

Could you have a live Mexican/Tejano band during cocktail hour? Then maybe more relaxed/no vocal music during the reception?

I actually would not compromise on this. At all. I am Mexican, and I know what music you're talking about. But, if neither of you like it, then don't have it.

It seems silly to compromise on music.

All this said, I am assuming your parents are not contributing financially. At least that was my case, and I had none of that music. Although my dad's family likes it, and my mom's family finds it ghetto. Both sides are Mexican. I just did not want it at my wedding.

Why not do both? I'm black and my fiance is white but we will have a few Mexicans there and Spanish is a foreign language that I have studied for years. We will have plenty of Latin pop. I've been listening to a lot of Luis Fonsi and Alvaro Soler recently lol. Only a handful of us will understand it but I'm ok with that. Maybe play a little to appease your mom then play something else.
