Mexican or Burgers in a "fancy" venue?

S, on September 3, 2020 at 12:17 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17

Is it tacky to have build your own burgers or Mexican buffet at a nicer venue? When I say "nicer" it's an industrial warehouse with brick, etc but it is a pretty venue with long tables (& white tablecloths). Got it for a great deal on a weekday during their off months!

I know that *technically* Mexican is the easiest to appease for most food sensitivities/vegans/meat eaters and it's flexible enough for anyone to make burritos, tacos, nachos, salad etc. But it is the least "classy" option. Not to mention I'm feeding everyone beans while indoors...
Build your own burgers from a local/organic restaurant is a step up in food quality and presentation. However, I'd still be feeding people a sandwich (technically) & chips.
Trying to be smart with the money but if you were going to this wedding, what would you think?

I personally think that a Mexican buffet is slightly more elegant than burgers.

I say that, in the end, it's your wedding and your preference is all that matters! Nice, normal people will be happy with whatever you serve, because they'll just be excited to celebrate your marriage with you! And personally, I think being able to "customize" your plate through build-your-own bars is super fun.

I would prefer Mexican. I agree that it is more elegant than burgers. We had a nacho bar for our late night snack and it was amazing.

What’s your level of formality? Dress code or style of dresses for bridesmaids? Industrial with white table clothes can be styled upscale or downplayed for more casual vibes. Either of those food options can be messy. If I’m putting on a nice cocktail dress or long gown I’d expect to be eating with silverware and cloth napkins, not my hands and paper napkins. But I’m thinking you’re going more casual vibes/dress code with the weekday wedding and casual food, so shouldn’t be a problem. Just my 2 cents!

Great question! It's ATM** a mix of both formal and informal. We were going to go more casual (originally I just wanted a nice elopement in a fun place with pictures). But he loves the idea of being properly married in a small ceremony fashion (and I got a LOT of push back from inner+ext relatives).
So, long story short, we're figuring this out. It's turning out to be more formal than expected. However, I doubt most of my friends and relatives are going to wear anything like a cocktail dress or suit (even if I requested it). And while my groom is wearing a suit & I'm in a elegant dress- we're still projecting MarioKart on the wall for people to play during the reception. So, I don't know.... you raise an excellent point.

If your sole purpose is to save money, I'd consider Mexican or Italian. You can get more for your money with both of those.

Both options are delicious and appeal to the masses. As long as you're providing yummy filling food, no one should be upset that it isn't standard dry chicken and strip steak commonly served at weddings. Do what works for you and your guests.
What you are planning is not inappropriate in the least.

I hate to be THAT person, but I wonder why you think Mexican food is not “classy” 🤔 Do you think us Mexicans don’t ever have formal affairs where we serve our own food? Just some food for thought. (Pun intended)

Where are we for the Mexican food....

If it's texas or southern california or somewhere near the Mexican border (500ish miles).... Mexican food is actually popular choice and is usually done pretty well.

However further north where usually the best taco restaurant is taco bell (which pains my texas heart to say after eating good taco truck tacos and living all over the state both east and west texas). Then, don't do tacos in Wisconsin... They suck and the seasoning is usually so bland and wrong.

Burgers sounds good but that's a know your crowd.

If you're worried about vegans, build your own pizza can work with no cheese, tomato sauce veggie toppings etc. Pizza is a good crowd pleaser

You can still cater to vegans/vegetarians regardless of Mexican or burger menu as vegan meat and dairy alternatives are widely available and caterers/restaurants have zero issue accommodating that if you let them know.

Ah, no. That's not it at all. Authentic Mexican food tastes beautiful 😍. However, we'll be doing more tex-mex style or ...even, Cali-Mexican (maybe). Probably not even prepared by Mexican chefs.
And Tex-Mex, while still tasty, is still something that people generally eat every week and view it as an everyday type food. I mean, most people don't expect Chipotle at a wedding.

I understand where you’re coming from now. I honestly love when at formal affairs they have everyday food. I mean they serve in-n-out at Oscars parties, so unless you think some in your crowd will judge you for it (and if they would maybe they don’t need to be there,) I would go for Mexican food. People like good food, so as long as the food is good, that’s what they’ll care about most.

Agree 100%. Go for yummy food everytime when possible. Your guests remember if it was delicious/hot/filling or not, and most will not judge what it is unless it's really bad or too fancy/exotic for their palates.

We are having pizza from a local pizzeria with hors d'oeuvres. Honestly if you want burgers I would do it. That actually would be awesome to go to a wedding with build your own burgers. I would make sure they offer a vegan burger as well just in case.
