Mermaid to Sheath

Erin, on August 11, 2019 at 6:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Hi All! I'm really torn between two different dresses. I LOVE the dress in the first image below, it's the one I really love and feel great in! (Stella York 6793). However, I'm wondering if it is possible to tailor slightly to remove some of the poofiness at the bottom. I tend to like the sheath/fit and flare fit more than the mermaid fit. The dress has a couple layers of tulle including one that angles out to add some volume. I'm thinking if this is removed, it would allow the dress to lay a little flatter. I'm curious if anyone else has tried this, and if it worked out okay!

I'm also posting an image of a second dress (Stella York 6574) which is the other one I really like, but doesn't have the tulle at the bottom I love, or the mesh kind of cut-out piece in the bodice which I love. It does have the straighter style.

I would talk to the seamstress at the bridal salon, or to the consultant. I ended up with an A-line and my consultant gave me suggestions for making it more of less poofy depending on my preference

This dress is actually more a trumpet than a mermaid ( flare starts higher up on leg) and usually needs a petticoat ( attached or separate) to flare out so much. And if the extra tulle is all underneath, an attached petticoats g, it is easy to replace it with a less full or even single layer net, so it does not spread nearly as much. Easy type of alteration.

Thanks for the response! That's good to hear, I imagine it's fairly easy to modify the poofiness Smiley smile

Ahh, good to know - I don't know my dress styles very well yet Smiley winking I do think it had an attached petticoat below a few layers of tulle and fabric. I think that is what was giving it the wide spread-out. I Even if the poof started a little lower down I would like it more, I think. Glad to hear it's an easy type of alteration! Huge thanks for your reply Smiley smile

Talk to the person at the bridal salon. They are very helpful I find. I went into look at dresses and told them I wanted an A-line and I wasn’t willing to budge, but they found me some beautiful dresses that weren’t A-line and didn’t have too much poof (I didn’t want too much poof, it’s just not my thing).

Because the lower than calf spread of a mermaid depends on a dramatic wide pouf, often those layers are permanent. You can add more, but not easily take away. But trumpets, standard, are almost always a basted in/ easily removed or made less, or separate petticoat. Because almost half their sales are people who want it to drape close to their body standing in sitting, then flare out when they dance, or use a wrist loop for a train. So they are deliberately made more easily altered, better sales without carrying a bunch of similar dresses, different pouf . Easy peasy with the higher cut trumpets

I think the tulle at the bottom could easily be removed. But both dresses are gorgeous. So either choice will be a good one! But I do really love #1.

Good luck!! They're both beautiful, and I'm sure that the seamstress can alter the dress to your liking!

I thought I loved the second one you posted and almost said yes to that dress! Over the weekend I ended up finding a different fitted dress that flares out in tulle at the bottom. I loved the back details of the second one you posted but the one I found also has a beautiful open back. Take your time hunting and best of luck! Definitely try them on to be sure!

Hey Erin! Have you spoken to a seamstress about these alterations?

I know this an old post but I am curious Erin (if you even see this post!) did you end up with 6793 or talk with a seamstress? Your question is my exact thoughts. The work on it is so intricate and gorgeous but the poof is too much on my petite stature. I haven’t spoke with a seamstress but thought I’d ask here anyways!

Alicia, start a post under wedding attire, since a lot will skip over it with an old date in the first posts.
And those of us who have made or altered gowns will help. Your height likely means changing the dress in a different way.
