Mermaid Dress Arrived & Looks Very Different - Advice/opinions Please

Alyssa, on January 31, 2020 at 12:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9

Hi! I ordered a Mori Lee by Madeline Garner Mermaid dress in Ivory. It is the Rosamund Wedding Dress, Style number is 2084. It recently arrived to the store and when my mom and I went in for the first fitting we initially thought it looked like a totally different dress but we couldn't figure out exactly what was different. After comparing pictures of me in the original sample dress that I tried on to the pictures of the dress I ordered, I think I have figured out what the differences are:

First, I noticed the color looked a lot more ivory (darker) than the sample although the store says that the sample was also ivory. The beading also looks less sparkly and more silvery on the dress I purchased. Not sure if this is just the lighting, or if it could possibly be a different color. The main difference I noticed was the difference in where the dress begins to "flare out." The dress I ordered begins to flare out MUCH higher than the sample dress. You can see in the photos that the original dress I tried on was much more fitted all the way down and flared just above my knees, whereas the dress I ordered flares just below the hip bone. Now, the sample dress was a size 8 and I am a size 0 and I'm 5 foot, so I knew the flare would come up a little, but I didn't think it would come up all the way and take away the fitted mermaid look. Even on the model the flare begins much lower, giving that mermaid look. Why would this be? I did notice that the store decided to order the 55" version of the dress being that I am short. Could that have caused it? I feel as if it no longer gives me that mermaid look or feel being that the flare begins so high up, and doesn't highlight my body.

What are your opinions on this? Do you think if I asked the store to order the longer length and had the bottom hemmed the "flare" wouldn't start so high?

I would appreciate any thoughts or opinions! Thank you!! Smiley smile

Ps: I also noticed the bodice on the dress I ordered is see-through and the sample was not - turns out the store ordered the wrong version and they are having the lining sent from the designer and are going to sew it in - so that part is hopefully solved.

The dresses to look different but instead of fitted mermaid it is more trumpet style. I would ask the store but I will say I would not compare your height to the models as they are typically taller than the average person. Maybe a seamstress could shorten the skirt some? The bodice does look different so I would ask about that. I am sorry and I hope the store can fix the issue.

Actually looking at where the mermaid part hits on the model it looks about the same on you but it looks like it needs to be taken in because you have a tiny waist it seems.

    Hi Alyssa,
OMG, your dress is STUNNING, how beautiful, you clearly have wonderful taste! I think the longer dress would solve the problem, lighting could be what's making the color seem different, I think you need the opinion of a top seamstress, it's such a gorgeous gown, I'm sure it can be fitted to your satisfaction! I had the hardest time picking my dress, I love the mermaid style also, I was considering a Casablanca style 2163, but I hated how it fit around the bust ( I have small boobs, less than a B cup ) even though my seamstress said she could see in padded cups, so I ended up buying a Stella York, style 6979, I would love your thoughts if you care to check it out! Good luck.

Yeah, I think your main issue is that the dress is still big on you. Fret not girl! Idk about the colors. They seem pretty similar, but the lack of lining could be throwing you off. I'd let a seamstress do their thing and see if it gets better!

I definitely see your point about how different they look because of the fit. I’d talk to your seamstress and keep those original photos! Once they fit it to you they should be able to create that shape you want. It’s a gorgeous dress!

Wait. Why is the bodice different. The sample one looks Opaque and the one you have on is transparent lace.

In the sample dress, it looks like there is a lining that changes the look of the bodice of the dress. The color doesn't look different than the sample dress but definitely different than the picture you posted last. I would wait to see what it looks like after alterations. It's a beautiful choice.

I agree with a lot of the other comments, I think once it's fitted and you have the correct lining in, it'll look more like it should. I think not having the lining throws it off and you still need to have it taken in a bit. My dress is actually this same brand, but I purchased my dress off the rack because it was only about a half a size to a size too big.
