Menu Tasting Tipping

gschumann1, on January 3, 2018 at 3:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

We are doing our menu tasting with our venue next Thursday evening. Our venue is all inclusive with catering/bar/DOC etc. and our venue pricing includes service charge (gratuities per our DOC at the venue). We are still going to tip during the tasting as I think that's only fair as the chef is providing us this additional service to preview our menu. My question is how much do we tip for this? It's going to be myself, FH, FFIL&FMIL, as well as his two sisters/bridesmaids. Since we're sharing 6 entrees to taste, how should the tip be applied here? I normally do at least 20% regardless of where I go but I have no set bill or price point to go off of for the food pricing on average as our pricing includes all of our extras. Any ideas?

It would never occur to me to tip for a tasting that's included in the package I'm already paying for. As far as I'm concerned, they built the cost of your tasting into their fees, and therefore it's already covered by your service charge and whatever gratuity you give after the wedding. Also, I worked in many restaurants when I was younger and tips don't go to the chef, they're for the servers. If you have a separate server, (which you might not even have, your DOC could be bringing the dishes), then maybe throw him a $20, but 20% of your wedding meal cost x's 6 is outrageous, and a wedding tasting is not likely going to be a true service-type meal that garners that amount.

We tipped the waiter who did our tasting 60 bucks. He had no other tables, was only serving us, and did all courses and wine presentation. Felt like the right thing to do.

I think FallBride is right, if you decide to tip maybe just a server but a full 20% like you would at a restaurant. This is a good point, thanks for posting!

For us, we have a similar venue with an all inclusive pricing and our tasting is included. I wouldn’t think to tip since you’re gratuity is included in the final payment. You could always ask your DOC if they work for the venue how the person who do your tasting is tipped.
