Menu question for plated dinner

Tina, on July 28, 2019 at 1:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17
We are having a plated dinner with two options, the guests make their choice on the invitation RSVP. There will also be a "hidden" vegan option for those who request.

I'm planning on doing menu cards on each plate. Do I have all three entrees on the card? Just the two main ones? Our venue allows us two choices but will accommodate a third for dietary requests, as long as it's just a handful of people. I don't want guests to think they were excluded from choosing a third option if that makes sense. Any wording advice?

I would just put a line on your rsvp for dietary restrictions. That will give you an idea of how many vegan meals you’ll need and then you can reach out to those people and let them know of their option.

Since the vegan is a silent option, don't include it on the menus; otherwise, it wouldn't be "silent." If you include it, it would imply that it was an option available to all your guests when it wasn't. We also had a silent vegetarian and did not include it on the menu. We only included the 3 entrees available to all the guests. Here is a pic of our menu.

Thank you! Ironically it's my ex-husband and his partner that are vegans (we also have a few friends/family that are vegetarian). Lol Those who chose the silent option weren't confused not seeing their entree on the menu? I'm an over thinker so I want everything to make sense in my head!

I have a related question. My mom is worried about menu cards because, since people will have already made their decision when RSVPing, she thinks they’ll be confused day of seeing options and/or want to swap their choice day of. (not an option). Thoughts?

Not at all. We actually talked to them beforehand (we had 3) and coordinated their entrée with the chef. If you include the entrée on the menu, then it's no longer silent.

Each guest should have either an escort card (directing them to their table) or a place card (placed at each seat) "locking" them into their meal choice by a pre-designated entrée icon that notifies the servers to each guest's selection. The menu is added to inform guests of the complete meal including not only entrée choices but sides and sauces as well. I have never experienced guests being confused by a menu at their place setting since they had to select their option ahead of time when they RSVP'd, but if they do get confused, your servers should be able to clear up the confusion quickly by reminding the guest of their pre-selected entrée choice.

This would be very unusual. If a guest insisted, it could be possible your chef could make an exception, but considering the purpose of the guests pre-selecting the entrée is so the caterer only buys exactly the amount needed, it would not be likely the caterer would do this. Your guests should understand if this became an issue.

Thank you so much! I feel better! I'm doing all the stationery myself so I just wanted to make sure.

Oh and your cake sounds to die for!

Thank you! Our pastry chef created it based on our wish to "taste a cake that invoked Christmas." He gave us 3 choices and that was the one we fell in love with.

I guess I just don't see the point of a menu if I chose at the time of an RSVP? If I picked in advanced and can't change it the menu seems like a waste of paper.

I'm not sure why you would need/want a menu card if they already choose their meal? It would seem kind of confusing to me.

The menu card would state the whole meal (starters, salad, mains and sides). This won't be on the invitation and it will allow people to see what they are having. Also, being a semi formal event I thought they would add the right touch. 🙂

It's just one of the more traditional things I'm choosing to do. I already have the stationery .99 from Goodwill) and will be printing them myself. I get they will be thrown away at day's end, but I like the idea of showing the complete menu and not just the protein choice. 🙂

I would have it listed so that way they know they can actually eat something. But maybe make it well known as the Vegan Option and not say what it is.

Yay, congratulations! What a fun stage in the wedding planning process... Unless you think more than a few will select this option, consider keeping it off of the listing. Since you will know ahead of time how many people will be selecting this option, you could always customized the card for the select few with only that option listed. When you complete your seating chart, your wedding coordinator/ caterer will need to know what guest has the dietary restriction. This will also be a helpful way to keep them on track and keep people from asking for the additional option and swapping out their original selection.
