Menu feedback wanted!

Sarah, on January 16, 2020 at 12:29 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16

Hi there! My fiancé and I are both vegetarians, and we're having a vegetarian wedding (exceptions will of course be made for guests with dietary restrictions). I'd love feedback on our planned menu – does this seem like enough variety? As non-vegetarians, would you be happy with this selection of food? Many of our friends and family are vegetarians, but we want to make sure our meat-eating loved ones don't leave hungry! We're doing family style, so people will be able to eat as many of the dishes as they like. Thanks!

Stationed board during cocktail hour:

-Assorted cheeses, tapenade, and chutney with mixed olives, seasonal fruit, assorted crackers, breadsticks, and baguette

Passed appetizers:

-Mushroom tartlets with taleggio cheese

-Grilled zucchini and halloumi skewers with romesco sauce

-Corn fritters with cilantro creme fraiche

-Butternut squash soup shooter with apple and cheddar grilled cheese

Salads:

-Mixed greens and shaved apples with feta, pepitas, and cider vinaigrette

-Roasted beets salad with orange, feta, and toasted walnuts

Entrees:

-Butternut squash lasagna with sage bechamel sauce and herb ricotta

-Chana masala with jasmine rice

Sides:

-Spicy black bean cakes with avocado chipotle crema

-Roasted mushrooms with tomato fondue, butter beans, corn, lima beans, and tomato demi glaze

Desert:

-Wedding cake

I'd be happy with that spread. I'm definitely not a vegetarian but I love food and that all sounds delicious!!

I have never had some of the food you have listed and I am a rather picky eater so I would be hesitant to try some of this food. Also, a lot of people don't like mushrooms or spicy food so I would avoid those. To be honest as a non-vegetarian, I would probably leave your wedding hungry. Some of it is because your food choices seem rather fancy. I also like meat so it would be weird to not have that as an option. If it were me I would offer simplier options like a garden salad, mixed veggies or something like that. I also know some people who simply don't eat fruits and veggies so they also wouldn't want any of the food at your wedding.

Our hope was that there would be at least one "familiar" food per course (cheese and crackers, grilled cheese, mixed greens salad, lasagna). Do those options still seem too unfamiliar/fancy?

Honestly, as a non-vegetarian, I would probably leave starving. I'm pretty picky like the PP, and I honestly think the only things I would eat are the cheese, corn fritter, and possibly the mixed green salad (big maybe on that one). If I were to each the lasagna, I would attempt to pick all the squash out of it. And if I couldn't, I wouldn't eat it.

Good to know! Any suggestions for alternatives? What sort of meat-free options would you be comfortable with? We're trying to avoid "meat alternatives" like veggie burgers, soy meat, etc., because no one really likes those Smiley tongue

Just a plain lasagna would probably be good. I'm all for herbs and spices, so really the only thing that turned me off about that was the squash. Would a ceaser salad be an option? That's nice and simple. Sides wise I would maybe do like a garlic roasted green bean or something a little less complex. As a non veggie eater I get really scared off by the "non traditional" veggies. Maybe with the apps just do a regular grilled cheese with a tomato soup shooter. Still nice and fun, but more traditional for people like me.

All of it sounds good but I think I’d still be really hungry and probably go to McDonald’s after. But that’d be my problem not yours.

Some of this stuff I have never heard of or wouldn't try. I think it is better to go with simplier options rather than fancy options. Cheese and trackers sound good. The other things is what I am not sure about. To me, apples and squash wouldn't go with cheese for grilled cheese. We had grilled cheese as a passed app and it was cheese, tomato and basil. We also only had one salad option. I would pick a simplier salad like garden salad. I would also make a normal lasagna just without the meat instead of a plant based one. I would also eliminate anything with mushrooms and spicy favors as I know plenty of people that don't like either one.

I think your menu sounds AMAZING!!! Many of my friends and family members would also agree! You have lots of options, and if your guest list has a lot of vegetarians and/or open-minded eaters, you are set! Maybe you could have falafel as a more hearty/meat-like option? (Maybe instead of the mushroom side dish bc you already have mushrooms earlier on)

I'm basically the opposite of a vegetarian (we honestly eat red meat multiple times a day almost every day) and I'd be happy with the wide selection. I'm not an Indian food fan so I like that there is another entree selection.

Are you serving a vegetarian spread for religious purposes? If not, I’d say to include a fish or chicken entree for the meat eaters, even if you don’t include red meat. I’ve never been to a meat-free wedding, and honestly think I’d be hitting the nearest McDonald’s on the way home lol. If you decide to keep it meat-free, mention that to guests in advance.

Everything sounds good, but as a non-vegitarian, I’d likely stop on the way home for food. I think offering one meat entree (poultry is always a guest favorite) for your meat eating guests would be nice. Meat eaters typically offer a vegetarian option at their reception, I personally think vegetarians should return the favor.

My comment looks like it didn't post and I feel strongly about this so I'm typing it again..

After reading the comments..this is how I feel..
You should not be expected to serve meat at your vegetarian wedding. It's not like people who eat meat don't eat vegetables, cheese, grains, etc. It's one meal. They can suck it up and try something new or be hungry.
You're never going to please everyone..especially from the comments of the picky eaters in here. Don't dull down your menu for people who don't like to try to expand their palate.
Keep your awesome menu. It sounds delicious. Butternut squash lasagna is amazing and apples and cheese go together so well. So well in fact that some people put cheddar on their apple pie!! Apples and brie are delicious as well.
I was really bummed when I found out the vegetarian choices at our venue. The only meal that didn't have cheese (we have some vegan friends) is a plate of grilled vegetables with a red pepper coulis and rice. Boo..

Thanks for the validation! We've already made up our minds that we won't be serving meat at the wedding, so that's a done deal – we want our wedding to be reflective of our ethics/values, and to us that means no meat. I don't really see it as any different than a Jewish couple serving Kosher food, a Muslim couple serving Halal, etc. Plus I know from our tasting that our food is delicious and filling!

I do think switching a couple of small things for something more simple could be a good idea, just in case we have some picky eaters. The butternut squash lasagna was actually my favorite thing at our tasting so I won't be changing that, lol Smiley tongue But maybe changing one of our sides and/or appetizers so that people who are picky eaters can load up on smaller things.
