Menu Cards for a buffet reception?

Lauren20, on January 30, 2010 at 5:21 PM Posted in Planning 1 23

Okay ladies I need some help. I really like the idea of menu cards for each person. However, we are having a buffet line recpeption. Is it silly to put menu cards out for everyone since it is a buffet?

If you really just like the look of them, I think it would be okay to do. But IMO it's unnecessary and I can think of other things to spend the money on.

I don't see why people make a distinction between plated dinner and buffet style when deciding whether or not to have menu cards. Either way it goes, your guests won't know what the full menu is until the plate is placed in front of them or they visit the buffet. If you are concerned about cost, just make one per table. Maybe even incorporate it into your table numbers

I'm having a buffet dinner and I'm doing a menu card since certain tables will be "released" to the buffet so it's not a crazy stampede! I think I might do one for every other person or put a few on the table. I'd like them to know what is on the menu before they get up there to speed up the process. but to answer your question I don't think it's silly to put them out, but like ladylee said to cut costs just do every two or three people or one per table...

Go ahead, if you like...or you could just make 1 or 2 for each table?

If it's in your budget, I think it would be a nice touch, especially if there's some special meaning to what you've chosen (like something being a family recipe or native to the area etc).

Its your wedding if ou want to put out menu cards put out menu cards.

It is also an advantage for anybody who might have an allergy to something to be able to select their meal prior to going up.

Oh wow, I never thought of doing menu cards since we're also having a buffet style wedding. But now I'm starting to think they sound like a good idea. Oh man, one more thing to add to my list! I agree though and don't think you would need one for each person if you are worried about costs

I think we are going to do them. I'm doing them myself, and I think I'm going to do each one 1/4 of a page. This way I can get 4 out of every piece of paper. Smiley smile

That's what I plan to do (4 per page).

Wow!Thanks for bringing that up! I am also having a buffet and never thought of that. Since I think 1 for every person is unnecessary (sp?) for my wedding, would it be wrong just to include it in with the invitation and directions and RSVP's? That would mean 1 per household. They would know ahead of time, and for those that for some god awful reason would not like normal food (some people are picky!) , they know in advance to eat before coming or to bring their own.

@ dme_cjm...Including it in the invite is a personal preferance. If you don't want 1 per person, you could do 1 or 2 per table. You could put it in one of those cheap clear frames and stand it on the table. This would mean that it takes up space on your table though. Smiley smile

I love the idea of doing menu cards especially for a buffet. The people who are waiting for their turn know what great goodies are in store for them and what they will want to fill their plate with! I think it is a great idea. If you need any assistance with your cards let me know.

@ ladylee...I'm doing long skinny ones. I'm doing it this way because my venue is going to put the cards inside the napkins. They are folding the napkins to create a pocket for them. If bey are like postcards, they won't fit in my napkins. Smiley smile

You could do menu cards at the beginning of the buffet or have a card for each item at the buffet, so people know what they're serving themselves. I'm thinking that's what I will do, but we're also having a cocktail/hors d'oeuvres style reception.

Wow, 1st let me say buffet or sit down - menu cards are appropriate and if you like the look go for it! I like the look too, however, I agree with the 1st comment it’s not really necessary for a buffet. I have been to many formal events with buffets and never had a menu on my plate or table. Personally, I would laugh if someone included a menu card with my invitation. Your guests are adults and I don't think they have the NEED TO KNOW what they are eating 8 or more weeks in advance. One of the main benefits of a buffet is avoiding the ‘pick your meal and RVSP” crap! 2nd I wouldn't put a few menus at each table, that’s creating and asking for awkward situations, peeps looking over each others shoulders or shouting out where’s my menu, did you get one! Lastly, I would not put 1 menu out per table, it creates the awkwardness of passing it around and if you do 2 or 3 in the middle of a table - well it will be reminiscent of the table tent lunch menus in the company's cafeteria.

I'm having a buffet style wedding reception and I’ve been pondering this question for a while too. I think I’m going with my FH suggestion – put beautiful menus at each carving station (we’re doing 3 different cuisines) and maybe have little descriptions (size of a place card) cards for each dish. I believe we’re having servers at the stations so the description cards might not be necessary either. In the end it comes down to cost and budget. If we have it I might do menus per person, like someone posted - it’s nice to look at a menu and see the goodies awaiting you. But I too can think of other things to spend the money on!

Main point: Menu cards per person or menu/description at the buffet.

I'm doing menus for my buffet style reception, but I'm considering using the menu cards as the place cards. Any thoughts on that?
