Men’s warehouse skepticism

Gen, on February 14, 2019 at 5:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
I’m not sure if it’s the place itself or if it’s just the guy we met with specifically, but something is rubbing me the wrong way with men’s warehouse. We went about a month ago and registered my FH’s wedding party there, the guy we met with just made me feel kind of weird the whole time (ie told us it would look like “prom” if the vests were a color instead of black, and when we said we wanted them in the color he gave us a super judgy look, the total price came out to much more than we thought and not sure the explanation, when we got home and searched the group # nothing came up, etc) and the more I think about it, the more the entire situation just feels off to me and I’m not sure if we should just go with it as is, try a different location and a different sales guy, or just go elsewhere.

The only reason we wanted mens warehouse to begin with is because their colors match my bridesmaids’ David’s bridal dresses, but at this point I would prefer to have them go somewhere else if we can match the colors elsewhere.

Can you guys share your men’s warehouses experiences? I am not sure if I am overthinking or if I am right to feel off-put by it and should go to a different store before it’s too late. And does anyone know any other tux places that can match with David’s bridal?

My FH has a great experience at men’s warehouse when he went over Christmas, and he’s had good experiences in the past buying jackets from them BUT we went in a few weeks again to finalize the tux choice and get him fitting and it was one of my worse experience in a retail store ever — totally counteracted our previous positive experiences. We decided to ditch Men’s Warehouse for TheBlackTux and I’m so happy we did (better quality, better fit, better service).

That said it won’t be a prefect match with David’s bridal but you can get close enough.

We used men's warehouse to custom design FH's suit and groomsmen outfits. It was more expensive than we'd planned but we couldn't find the look we wanted otherwise. Our sales guy was fine, (he was pretty opinionated, we just disregarded any of his non-validating opinions), but he didn't enter all of our specifications right in their system. The group number won't be visible online, that's normal, it's just so that it can be looked up in the store. We went with one of the GM to a different location to order his suit, and that's when we found out the info wasn't in the system right. So the manager at this other location updated it for us, showed us the screen to make sure it was all correct and printed out the confirmation. It's been a pain (ie. needing to return/ reorder some stuff, but they'll exchange it for free) but the primary reason we went with them is their wide variety of options, and their many locations since our GM are all over the country. We're much more confident in them after going to a different location.

It definitely couldn't hurt to go to a different store and explain your concerns, ask them to confirm what's in their system, and ask about the cost and why it's higher than you'd expected.

We went into Men’s Wearhouse and were so disappointed in, well, everything. You couldn’t try anything on, the selection was not good, the salesperson was terrible, etc, etc. So, no, I don’t think you’re overthinking it!

FH also got the free at-home try-ons from both The Black Tux and Gen Tux - we again were disappointed (although I know many people here on WW love The Black Tux, so not sure why our experience was so different).

Anyway, we finally went to a local menswear shop and are SO HAPPY with our choice. We aren’t using DB for dresses, but the owner of the shop was so great in helping us find a tie/pocketsquare color that coordinated nicely with the bridesmaids dresses. I’m sure most local places would be happy to do that for you too (or might even know what matches perfectly since DB is such a big name), if you decide to go that route!

There's tons of bad MW experiences. So..here's mine (not terrible, not great). I called a week and a half in advance, talked to a gentleman and just said I was getting married and I'd like to come in to see what they have in store to try on. I said the groomsmen would be coming in as well to try on styles and get sized. He assured me that would be no problem, I didn't need an appointment, and they'd be able to try on different styles. I get there. 18 year old Suzy Q walks up super eager to help and I say I'm getting married and I'd like the guys to try on vests and shirts (all we're doing) to see what works best and get sized correctly. She pawns me off on Sally.

So, Sally is scatterbrained because she's been on vacation and they've just moved everything around. I fill out the paperwork of who we are, tell her I'm wanting solid ivory shirts and brown vests and I'd like to see my options. There happened to be a ivory shirt on the table we were at so she tossed it at me. Okay, fine. Then she takes me to the clearance rack because that's where the best deals are and they just put some brown vests over there. She proceeds to tell me how I should do mismatched because they have brown vests on clearance and I tell her no thanks, I want them to match. Back and forth..back and forth.. not helping me any.. finally, I just tell her to size the guys so I know what they would wear.
Meanwhile, Suzy Q comes back and tells me they have a really nice ivory shirt and to follow her. Yeah, it was striped, nothing like what I wanted. Another worker got involved and was like "can I go ahead and put these down? do you want to buy them now?" Uh, no. Suzy Q then asks if I have hired a photographer because she also does photography and is trying to get her name out there. Uhm, no thanks. That's not really appropriate as a worker to say to a customer to me.

My guys all get sized and she makes snide comments (which I couldn't hear but was told later by the guys). They were able to try on ONE black, prom dress looking vest. She never showed me any brown vests they could order or tried to show me any option really. She tried to get me to buy a whole suit and I told her just looking for a shirt/vest. Then she tried shoes. Nope, got it covered. Finally, I she was done sizing the guys and I just scooped up the cards with the sizes and said "thanks, we probably won't be back though" and walked out.

My coworker got married a year ago and said they sent the wrong tux twice to her guys and the wrong sizes a few times. She said it was a nightmare ordering from them between them not honoring the prices they'd said, not honoring the gift card they were supposed to be able to use, and the order coming in wrong multiple times.

We really had no trouble with them. She got a little weird calling in the extra coupon to apply to the order but otherwise it was pretty straight forward for us.

Run. I posted earlier about my annoyances with them. Most of the groomsman have already been fitted and paid for their rental but I’m seriously considering cancelling and getting refunds and using the black tux

FH has been in a few weddings and HATES having to go through Men’s Warehouse. He says nothing ever fits right, the customer service sucks, and it’s so cookie cutter. You go in and you are just one of the **** people who needs to get fitted for a suit for a wedding. I’ve heard great things about The Black Tux, I would check them out instead.

Thank you! I am looking into the black tux now and it looks great, much cheaper than men’s warehouse and they actually let you try it on first! Lol. When FH gets home I will have him look it over. Thank you (and everyone else who suggested it)!

We went to try mwh after being told they would fit my fh for a suit even if we were not buying there. We wanted to compare the price we had gotten for his dream suit (located in England) to something local. We told them we would want to do a custom suit and were told that they could find us a price for around 750. At the end of it all it ended up being 1300 for a bare minimum suit. The sales man was rude. When he talked to my fh he did not seem to take him seriously at all. He did not listen to what my fh wanted and tried to change his mind. After he initial consultation we asked if they could measure him and were told not unless you are buying something. When we explained what we were told they tried to cut us off and decided not to treat us the same way because we chose not to buy right that second. After the whole experience we will not be going there for the grooms men either.

SIL had a terrible experience at MW as a GM in a friend's wedding and decided then he would NOT use them for his & daughter's wedding. They went with Black Tux for the GM's suits and were VERY happy. The guys went to our local Nordstrom to be measured, and a couple needed adjustments when their suits were delivered, but Black Tux made the adjustments quickly and they all looked great at the wedding. SIL bought a custom-made suit for himself from Indochino and was very happy with that as well. (The Black Tux suits were about $100 [daughter & SIL bought the guys shirts on sale at Kohl's during Father's Day sales, with typical Kohl's coupons, for about $6 a shirt], and SIL's custom suit was under $400.)

Hi there! I am in NY and my FH was in two weddings last year, they both used Men's warehouse, and both experiences he had were awful! They also went to two different ones I believe.

Wedding 1- Bride and Groom went and picked out tux's and Groom got fitted that day. Groom told GM to go and get fitted for this suit and put it under this name. They have all the info all you have to do is get fitted. Fast forward a couple weeks FH goes to get fitted with another GM. They go and are told that that suit is not available anymore. FH calls Bride and is in a panic. Bride drives all the way there and my FH and Bride pick out a new suit (he was the best man and Groom was at work). This new suit does not come in "Big and Tall" which one of the GM is. They finally pick out another suit that will accommodate everyone and got fitted. Fast forward to when the suits come in. FH goes to get his, the jacket dosnt fit and the shirt is MIA. Pretty sure after my FH laid into them about all the problems they got fired or quit and one guy was crying *eye roll*. They finally get everything in and the right sizes and give them all free suspenders and offered my FH a discount off our wedding tux's which he kindly told them to F themselves (sorry). Fast forward to wedding day... one GMs pants ripped, and my FHs suspender loops ripped.

Wedding 2- Bride and Groom again went to pick out suits. Found one and tole they guys to go get fitted. Said that they need to tell them they are there for this wedding and need to get fitted for this suit. Groom had already paid for their shirts, ties, and shoes. FH and GM went to go get fitted all together, no problems. They went to go pay for their suits and ended up paying for the suits, shirts, ties, suspenders and shoes. ( Groom did not tell them at first that they had already paid for everything but the suit.) FH called Groom and was joking about price of suit and alterations. Groom was upset and told FH they were only supposed to pay for suit because they were paying the rest. Groom called the place and was very upset about the whole situation. The manager tried to offer them all kinds of free stuff and blah blah blah after on the phone for awhile they finally decided to give them their refunds.

This place we have not had good experiences with and we will not be going with them for our wedding. We are going to go through a privately owned suit shop that others we know have used and love.
