Men's Shirt Colors

Kari, on October 28, 2019 at 1:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

We were suit shopping yesterday and the salesperson asked what my wedding dress color was in order to pair my FH in the correct colored shirt. I told him it was ivory and he brought out an "ivory" shirt but it was much darker, warmer, and yellower than the ivory of my dress (almost the color of a manilla envelope like those used in filing cabinets). I think of wedding dress ivory as being a soft white (vs a crisp, bright white) and feel like the ivory shirts were too dingy by comparison, but the salesperson said a standard "white" shirt might be too bright.

My question is, did you put any thought into matching your groom's shirt with the bride's dress? Did you find a solution? Is there such a thing as a "soft white" men's dress shirt? I'm keeping my dress a secret from my FH until our wedding (he knows some details, but hasn't seen the dress), so aside from bringing home a variety of men's shirts for comparison, I'm not sure how to go about matching them.

My fiancé doesn’t even know my dress is ivory. He’s just getting a white shirt. I’m sure it’ll be fine

I would just get a white shirt, it sounds like it would match a lot more than the version of ivory they offer.

I agree with PP to go with the white, plus if your FH is wearing a jacket at all or even a vest a lot of the shirt won't be visible at least for pictures.

I think white will be fine. Most ivory dresses aren’t that far off from white.

My dress was ivory-ish, my husband just wore a white shirt and it looked fine! You couldn't even tell really.

I didn't get an ivory dress because a salesperson brought up this issues. I wish I wouldn't have listened because it's not a big deal. I think the crisp white shirt looks better regardless of the shade of wedding dress.

Bridal ivory looks white to the naked eye so I would get a white shirt.

I didn't put any thought into that, actually aha. i think because my husband had a suit jacket too that you didn't really see his dress shirt all that much.

    Thanks ladies! Super helpful!

I tend to notice details like that but felt that a standard men's white shirt would look fine with my dress. Both just look like a soft white to me. My FH is planning on having a 3-piece suit so all our formal photos will include the jacket and vest anyway.

My fiance was actually the one who came up with the idea of matching me 😂 His shirt is white but his vest is ivory. He also commented that the ivory shirt didnt really look " ivory " but more yellow which is why is chose to have the vest match me instead.

I've been thinkin' about that whole ivory vs white thing as well since my dress is ivory. My FH hasn't seen it but he does know the color.
