men's dress shirt sizes

Panda Bride, on February 26, 2011 at 10:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I am trying to order the groomsmen dress shirts and one of my groomsmen is being a pain and doesn't know his size/doesn't seem to care to figure it out. He is 6'6, 220lbs, and wears an L-XL normal shirt. He has really long arms because he is tall, but the guys are going to have their sleeves rolled up anyway, so does the length really matter? I was thinking of ordering him a 17/34-35 shirt instead of the 17/36-37 because it won't matter of the sleeves are too short since we are rolling them, right?

Hey I had this same problem. The best man kept postponing that I had enough and had my husband talked to him. Two weeks before wedding, he finally went to men's wearhouse. I said he can't go to wedding if he don't get fitted. Men Wearhouse need a week before wedding to get fitted, so you have a LOT of time Smiley smile Length does matter :/ his neck also need to be measured and his waist.

Mens warehouse doesn't rent the shirts so we are buying them online Smiley sad luckily I found a good deal though. It has been like pulling teeth getting his measurements, I'm about to just guess and order his shirt.

Or you can get a measurement tape and measure him?

I will probably have to measure him myself. So the 17 would be the neck, the 34 would be the waist, and the 35 would be the arm length?

That sound about right, but please have him fitted to make sure.

Lynley... the measurements for Men's shirt sizes are neck size and sleeve (arm) length.

    No waist on shirts.

The 34/35 is like how women jr clothing is 7/8

Also, there are slim fit/cut shirts and some that have a more relaxed fit. So make sure you know the fit. I have bought the same size shirt in different brands and they fit hubby different.

    My husband is 5'10" and when he was 210 he wore a 17 - 17 1/2 and 34-35 sleeve.

    Now he is 185? and 17 - 16 1/2 but still 34-35 sleeve.

I would do the longer sleeve, that way if he want to wear it again, at least it will be long enough.

Neck measurement : Using a cloth tape measure, have a friend measure around your neck (N) approximately 1" up from the base - where the neck meets the shoulders. Neck sizes are based in half inch increments ex.- 16, 16 1/2, 17, 17 1/2 etc. If the neck measurement falls between sizes (ex. 16 1/4) always size up.

Sleeve measurement : You'll need assistance for this one. (S) Standing up straight bend your right arm at a right angle - as if you were blocking in football. Place the head of the tape between the shoulder blades measure out and around the elbow straight to the wrist. On average you should come up with a measurement between 31 & 37 inches. If the sleeve measurement falls between sizes, for example 35 1/2 always size up, in this case to 36.
