Men's attire

Amber, on August 6, 2017 at 7:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

My FH has only requested one thing for our wedding. That he and all the other men in the wedding wear kilts. Simple black utility kilts so no plaid, also not guests but groomsmen. Im trying to find the best look for this. So im thinking black boots, the black kilts, white or black shirts, and a black vest. (No suit jackets in our group, not our style.) I'm thinking its simple and the classical color scene is easy. Any tips? Any others doing kilts? (Lol unlikely but maybe)

Are you Scottish? Is he Scottish? If not, kilts are not appropriate to wear.

I don't like kilts and I don't know anything about what looks good with them. If it were me I would put him in charge.

Is FH of Celtic decent? The "plaid" is called tartan and it carries significant meaning. I have to say, I've never heard of black utility kilts. But, I suppose that's because my family has always used the tartan.

Is your FH of Celtic descent? If not, that's cultural appropriation.

If his family has a tartan, he and his groomsmen should wear that.

My FH is wearing the kilt in respect of his heritage yes. Yes he has worn a kilt before. We are going with the black utility kilt because we are not positive of his tartan.

I have never seen a kilt worn with anything but a white shirt. I'm not sure if it's a thing, but just a personal observation. If FH wears kilts I would assume he knows the proper attire. I've never paid much attention.

    Not cool, @Tricia.

@Amber Clans and their affiliated last names are heavily documented, making it easy to figure out a family tartan. A lot of Scottish kilt sites have this function. Here's one: http://www.scotclans.com/scottish-clans/whats-my-clan/

Apparently Tricia's comment got deleted because I can't see it...darn.

OP, we did kilts. H and his son (BM) wore their family tartan, and everyone else wore either a family tartan, open tartan, or occupational tartan. Everyone wore white shirts with Prince Charlie jackets and vests. Hose were colored based on the tartans, and they wore black ghillie brogues. H wore a fly plaid for a little extra formality.

Black utility kilts are a bit more informal, but fine. I'd do a white shirt with that. If you want to add color somewhere, maybe with the tie?

Renting utility kilts might be a little hard--I've never seen them at a kilt rental place. H owns 3 and has gotten them all from SportKilt.

My number one piece of kilt advice is PLEASE don't make them wear them if they don't want to. Most of H's groomsmen were super excited to wear them, but one (H's other son) really didn't want to. He wore a suit with a tartan sash, and it looked great. It's really not the end of the world if they don't all match.

I don't have any experience with kilts, but would it be cold for them as your wedding is in April?
