Memorial for dad

Sasha, on September 30, 2016 at 1:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

My wedding was supposed to be in November but unfortunately my dad passed away last week. My wedding has been postponed to December and I wanted to do something on my wedding day as a memorial for my dad. Any ideas?

Hi, first of all sorry for your loss. I lost my father 3 months ago and our wedding is next April. I found this memorial candle and thought it was perfect. http://www.theweddingoutlet.com/Wedding-Ceremony/Memorial-Accessories/Memorial-Candle-Holder?gclid=Cj0KEQjwmri_BRCZpaHkuIH75_IBEiQAIG0rIZg88EmX6VZ50kUM1Uzb6ONK6NsQatzU1xUfoxaco38aAsfi8P8HAQ

I'm very very sorry for your loss.

The hard part is to find something that's meaningful to you, but not turn your wedding/reception into a memorial to him, or reduce you to tears thinking about him.

Some people put out a pic on a table with thoughts about their loved one. Some wear or bring jewelry of their loved one in their bouquet.

For Dads specifically, some ladies take a pair of his jeans or a shirt and cut a heart out of it and have it sewn into their dress, sometimes as a something blue.

My dad passed several years ago, I had one of his favorite ties wrapped around my flowers.

I'm in a similar situation, but it was my FFIL that we lost. I'm so sorry you're going through this, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. <3 @Jennifer: I love your idea of using his favorite tie!

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry for the things you had to go through. You can wrap your father's favorite tie, or you can write a poem. There are so many ways to hinor him at your wedding, I've seen a couple of good ideas on pinterest.

I'm sorry about your father, how sad, I hope your dad is still just as wonderful! FH's father and grandmother have passed away. We're placing framed poems on chairs during the ceremony for them.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know this time seems impossible. I was in the exact same position a few months ago -- my mom died on March 28 and my wedding was July 16 -- and I couldn't even imagine how we could make her presence felt in a way that would even begin to make up for the hole in my heart.

Here is what we did, in case it helps. You have to feel out what's right for you; what seems meaningful to me may seem maudlin to you. There is no wrong answer.

-- Our rabbi (who knew my mom well, and performed her funeral) mentioned her during a part of our ceremony that she had very strong feelings about (wording the translation of the Hebrew vows in a certain way)

-- We mentioned her in the program (pasting below what I wrote in case it helps?)

-- We had a table outside the reception with photos of all our grandparents and parents on THEIR wedding days. I loved having a happy memory as part of the way we were honoring her.

-- My dad and sister mentioned her in their toasts

I found the WW community to be an unexpected and amazing source of support during those few months (and since!). We are here for you, whatever you need. Sending you love and hugs, and wishes for peace in your heart.

My program text, in case you want it:

    IN LOVING MEMORY

Jewish tradition tells us that the souls of our loved ones attend their descendants’ weddings.

    Today, we believe that:

    BRIDE'S MOM'S NAME

    BRIDE'S GRANDPARENTS

    GROOM'S GRANDPARENTS

are all celebrating alongside us in spirit.

We remember especially BRIDE’s mother, NAME, the loss of whom is fresh in our hearts, especially today. Mom, NAME, we love you and miss you, today and every day. We will honor you by making this a day of joy and a celebration of life, bittersweet though it is without you.

So sorry for your loss. MB2MA suggested a beautiful idea. I won't be able to do something like that. I would be a wreck, but a picture and a candle burning to signify his presence, it's a good idea. Best of luck!

I am so sorry for your loss. You could have a little table with a picture of him and a candle. Have a reserved seat with his picture at the ceremony. Have your florist attach a little framed picture of him to your bouquet.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I'm going to have this on my bouquet. I'm inserting a picture of my dad and I on the other side.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dad passed away 15 years ago. I will be having a table set up at the ceremony and reception with a photo of him and flowers. I will be carrying a really small amount of his ashes that we have left with me down the aisle, and I'll set them down on the table before the ceremony. It will be kinda subtle so that some people aren't put off by it,
