Read the reviews. Most of them are honest. I usually read the worst reviews first and if those don’t sound to bad I’ll keep the vendor in mind. If the reviews are absolutely unacceptable then I move on. I also only look at the top 3 on vendor like suggestions on here. I also look at Facebook pages and Instagram pages, I also read FB reviews. If I send a vendor an email I wait a week for a response. I also look up recommended vendors from my venue or coordinator first.
