Meal selection

Kristen, on October 29, 2014 at 3:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

My fiance and I originally planned to serve only one meal option for our wedding reception. But after struggling to pick one everyone would like (and dealing with our parents making a fuss over it being rude not to offer a choice) we recently decided to spend the extra money and offer a choice menu.

The problem is that I had already ordered our invitations which included a RSVP card. It seems weird to include a second insert to fill out where they select their meal (when they are already filling out the RSVP card) but I need our guests to indicate their meal selection. Is there anyway to fix this that doesn't look strange (or seem reduntant) but still gives me all the necessary info back from each guest. I don't know what to do...

Would it cost more to make a separate meal card, or just re-do the entire RSVP card? If it costs close to the same, I'd just re-do the RSVP card. It will save you $$ in postage in the long run.

You could potentially do a label to stick on the back. But I think I would just order new RSVP cards to save yourself the hassle.

Like Marbles said, I would try to re-do the RSVP card if you can. If not, could you and your family members get in contact with everyone somehow to get a verbal selection?

Can't you print a menu card and then have the waiter ask the guest what food they will want?

Rule of thumb: most men will pick a beef dish and most women will pick a chicken dish.... if that helps.

We cannot order new RSVP cards because they are attached to the invitation. It is a "boarding pass" themed invitation and the guests will tear away the RSVP and return it in the envelope provided [see pic]. I think my only options are a label on the back or a separate insert....

Darn! Those are so cute. I would order some extra inserts and not mess with them.

Can your caterer do a split entree? So chicken/beef on one plate. No choices for guests but they will have two things on their plate to chose from.

I think I would do a label somewhere - you could do one of the clear ones so it won't be too jarring. My worry with the insert would be that people wouldn't see it or not send both back.

Those are adorable, I wouldn't mess with them.

I would ask your caterer if guests can tell the waiter which dish they would like after they sit down for dinner. If that was not an option, I would do a separate insert. I'd like to say a label on the back is your best option, but I fear very little people will see the label (especially if it's on the back) and you'll end up having to call most of them.

ETA: Also, with the clear labels, pen likely won't be able to write on them because they are that clear plastic.

I would do what Nicole mentioned. I have been to weddings where you select while there. I am doing a dual entree so no one selects what they want but it is a surf and turf plate. Both servings are generous so even if you only eat the fish- it's a good size and the sides that come with it

I know some places you can select when you are there, however I know my venue that is not an option you have to notify them before hand. I would check with your venue! Worse comes worse, you could make your own extra insert on card stock. Make it match the theme/background if you can and make it witty something like 'Opps, our itinerary changed' - please select from the below meal options and return with your RSVP card. I would think that was cute and would understand that something change (I would assume out of your control) after you ordered invites. It would be a creative way to be able to keep everything you have an still get the info you need!

Speak to someone in charge at the venue -- a manager, owner, someone in authority. For my daughter's wedding, we offered four different plated entrees for guests. We were told by our venue coordinator that we needed to have our guests pre-select their entrees, so we listed all of the menu options out on the response card and the guests selected a meal -- six weeks in advance. When I called the venue with the final count for each meal, the owner answered the phone. When I told him that I just needed to give them the number of people ordering what meal, he told me that this was totally unnecessary. The guests could have ordered any of the four entrees table side. Make sure that isn't the case with your venue.
