MC - Use DJ or not?

Kellie&Ryan, on June 12, 2015 at 5:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

I'm kind of torn on whether or not I should just let the DJ be our MC for the wedding or if I should ask someone if they would want to do it. I was just going to have the DJ do it because he's very fun and out-going, but when I told my florist that...she kind of made a face and said..." You should really ask someone else." I know it's our day so its not up to anyone else (and really none of the florists' business) but I just want to know your opinions on it....?? Thanks!

Oh and P.S - How the hay do I change my picture? It's just two gold rings.

If you are comfortable with having the DJ be the MC then i say go for it. i am not sure why your florist thought that was a weird idea, we are just using our DJ. i dont plan on having him saying a ton.

to change your avatar go to your dashboard (at least thats where i find it on the desktop version) and its up in the left hand corner.

I'm also planning on using our DJ as the MC. I thought that's normally how it works.

I think it depends on the size of your crowd and their personality. Will they be on the dance floor already or need the MC to help get the party started? Plus, the MC will have more time to communicate with the maitre and make announcements while the DJ is concentrating only on music. Seems like it would run smoother to me. That being said, you could totally have one person do both. Just personal preference!

Also, here are the directions to change your picture:

    - Consider changing your avatar! (**Please note you can only do this through a computer, not a tablet or smartphone!** -- Thanks Mrs.S) Avatars are often how fellow community members can identify you! We certainly understand privacy concerns, so the picture doesn't have to be of you-- just something unique to you, your wedding, or something that you love! This will make it easier for us to remember who you are and follow your progression of posts.

    To do this:

    - Click 'Settings' at the top right-hand side of your screen

    - Click 'Profile and Privacy Settings'

    - Below 'Account Image' on the left, hover your mouse over the avatar and click 'Change Image'

    - Select an image from your Photo Album, your Avatars, or Upload from your computer & click 'Update Image'

    - Personalize your screen name! Because referring to members as 'Anonymous' feels a bit weird!

That is really weird because...people hire a DJ with the assumption they are being the MC.

There was a bride in here that posted that their DJ wanted them to hire a separate MC. Literally every person told them they needed to find a DJ. It's expected that the DJ kind of guides everything like with announcements, etc.

That's the way it should work. I've never been at a wedding with a separate MC.....it's your wedding, not Wheel of Fortune.

I didn't even know the DJ doesn't always MC as well. Whoops! My family uses the same DJ for every family event, so he'll be our MC as well as DJ.

My DJ is my MC. Does your Florist know your DJ? I think she needs to stick to the flowers...Smiley smile

We are not using the DJ as our MC. It will be FH's uncles doing that. I have never been to a wedding where the DJ was the MC, must be a Canadian thing.

Your DJ SHOULD be and usually is the MC. That florist has no idea what they are talking about. Wouldn't you want a professional to do the job they are paid to do instead of someone who has probably never done it before.

Also the emcee doesn't usually make the announcements, they control the flow of the night and make sure all the things happen on time

I've been to two weddings with separate "MCs" (both times, a friend of the bride and groom and also both times happened to be one of our friends too). The friend/MC had to stay sober the entire night up until his "duties" were done, and it seemed like it was really stressful for each of them trying to think of funny/witty/smart/sentimental things to say for each introduction or announcement. I know it is supposed to be an honour to be asked, but it seems like a lot to expect of a friend.

FMIL was also kinda insistent that we have a friend or family member do the MCing instead of the DJ - something about it being a tradition and that having the DJ do it is too impersonal. As a compromise, we're having whoever of our bridal party wants to make an announcement in charge of one announcement each - if none want to do it, or not enough do, the DJ will do the balance. Our DOC is in charge of timing and reminding the BP members when it is their turn, and this will get sorted out/scheduled ahead of time.

ETA: lol @LindseyC - why would that be a "Canadian" thing??

I don't what kinds of weddings that florist has been attending, but the ones I've been going to have a DJ who is also the MC. You don't need two people to do the job of one person. Save your money -- you're already spending enough.

MC= a master of ceremonies. A person who introduces wedding party and people for speeches. Also keeps the night flowing makes sure everything runs on time

@FutureMrs.Pej Everyone was making it sound like it was strange to not have the DJ be the MC. Its the norm here so I just figured it was one of those things that's more common in Canada lol.

@LindseyC - Ahh I see ok Smiley smile It just made me laugh (Canadian bride over here - and I guess maybe it is more common on our end since I have been to two like that. As a total aside, FH is Croatian, and his family keeps trying to get us to do all kinds of strange things because they are "Croatian" traditions - this was one of those things haha).

If you're hiring a dj why not? You're already paying him or her and most people hire the DJ with the expectation that they are also going to MC.
