May 16th brides- Cutting it too close?

Dana, on March 16, 2020 at 5:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
Hello lovelies!

I hope everyone’s hanging in there. I’ve seen quite the mix of those who canceled/postponed and those of you who are going forward!
Here’s my situation: We are supposed to get married on May 16th but my state put an actual ban on events over 50 people for 8 weeks from today, that puts us at 5/11, five days before our wedding. We invited 200 though we know with this going on we would probably only expect 75-100. My venue just now got in contact with me and said they canceled all events within the next 30 days but that she’s confident my date will be just fine but man that’s cutting it close, especially for guests who have to start making travel arrangements (some already have!) and what if the state decides to extend it!?
We have a backup date of 8/2 and while I feel like maybe that would be better safety wise my fear is that what if we decide to take it and is okay for a bit after the ban is lifted (I.e. my original date would probably be the “safest” time) but then it starts back up again in July after people stop social distancing and I’m back in this very same spot, but this time with no option to postpone, I’d cancel at that point....
I’m really not sure what to do, the unknowns and timing of this whole thing makes it super difficult for me to stick with a decision!!

I'm so sorry you have to go through this... If they're offering you a back up date of August 2, I'd take it now before someone else does! I think August 2 is a much safer bet than May 16th.

I would go with the back-up date to be safe. At this point, the CDC and White House are just spit-balling arbitrary dates. It could be 8 weeks, but it could also be 6 weeks or 12 weeks -- we just don't know at this point. As Hanna said, if they're offering you a backup date you should grab it before someone else does.

I actually was going to get married May 3rd and just spoke to the coordinator and took the back up date which is August 16. Better than rushing in the upcoming days if It gets cancelled or I’m forced to postpone and no dates are available.

    Good luck

Take the back up date now! We JUST moved our 5/9 wedding today, and our vendors had very few flexibility on remaining dates, and its going to get worse. Why risk it!

If we are being given a Sep or Oct back up date and our wedding is May 30th currently...should we take that? It's so difficult to make that decision. Thanks everyone.

Yes, 100%. Now they're saying we won't see a peak in cases for 45 days, and California is expecting to keep schools closed for the rest of the school year (end of May/early June). You should take a back-up date if they're giving it to you.
