Max Cost of Registry Item

SSJKarigan, on January 3, 2017 at 1:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 40

Just a simple question - I was thinking of things to put on my registry and my FH suggested a vacuum. I thought that wasn't a reasonable item to put on a registry because the one we want is like $400 bucks. That seems too pricey to ask someone to buy for me.

So that lead me to wonder, what's the most a given item on a registry should cost? My guess was around $150, but I wanna know what the good folks of the WW community think.

This is a know your crowd kind of thing. If you don't think any of your guests would spend $400 on gift, don't register for it. But keep in mind that many stores now offer a group gift option. You can choose a gift and pay a certain amount towards it. If other guests also cover the item, the store will ship it to the recipient. If the price isn't reached, the recipient receives a gift card for the amount contributed.

Imo, a registry is like a Christmas list: it everything you want, not everything you're for sure going to get. So what's the harm in putting it on? Maybe someone wants to be generous

I would advise to have larger items but also less expensive items. From what I have been told, people like having options. I would avoid only putting high ticket items like that on your registry but if you have a couple you throw in, it may be something someone wants to do for you. Just have a good balance Smiley smile

Definitely put some big ticket items, sometimes a group of friends (or family) will decide to all go in on it! I've done that before for a KitchenAid for a friend.

We registered for a deep freezer, and the ladies of my family went in together for it.

We put the $300 Dyson we wanted on our registry. One guest may not get you a large ticket item but a group of them may. A few of my friends pooled their money and bought us one of our larger priced items. Just make sure you have a good range of price points for the items you include and let your guests decide from there.

I capped out our items at $200. I couldn't justify more. It is definitely a know-your-crowd situation!

My cousin had a very expensive item on her registry so a group of us went in on it, so I think it's okay to include more expensive items. I think it's mostly important to have items of all different price ranges.

I would love to get a Dyson Ball Pet Vacuum... I have a very fluffy dog and her fur regularly clogs my current, relatively cheap vacuum. That would make my dreams come true. I mean hey, if it doesn't seem greedy or tacky I'd be open to it after all.

I think it's fine to put a couple expensive items on as long as you have a variety of items in lower price ranges too. You can always use your registry completion discount to purchase it if you don't receive it as a gift.

I've heard that the wedding gifts should only be as much as the meals placed in front of the guests. But everyone does things differently

I think you can have a few stretch gifts. You never know what people are willing to spend. We got $500 from several distant family members we didn't expect (closer relatives gave us $50-100 so it was certainly a surprise).

Related; my SIL had a stretch gift on her baby registry, a $350 glider that she didn't expect to get. But we got it for her, she was so surprised!

@Ashley That's interesting, I haven't heard that before. I'd be SOL if that's true: my cost per plate is super reasonable and my vendor had really good reviews on their food despite that.

You can definitely put a few higher priced items on your registry. If you don't get them, you at least get a registry discount at most places.

@Ashley not only have I never heard that before, but that sounds pretty fucked up. The cost of the wedding is far more per person than the plate of food they're being served anyway...

I'm with @OG Alecia, KitchenAid mixer! Then my next is a wine fridge (because, wine) that is less than $100.

It doesn't hurt to have a few expensive items. I know in my family that a few members will all go in on a gift together if it is on the more expensive side.

Plus, usually, you get a discount on it if it doesn't get bought if you register for it

My Kitchenaid and my le creuset pot were the most expensive - both between $300-$350. Both were bought by generous family members for my shower.

We have a roomba and kitchenaid on the registry which is obviously expensive. We put them on because some people would do a group gift and if not, we can use the completion discount (many stores offer this now) and buy it ourselves after the wedding. A registry is to give people options. You're not forcing them to buy things for you.
