Maui honeymoon can rental?

Heather A, on July 1, 2014 at 7:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Anyone go to maui and rent a car? What did you rent?

I'm in a great internal struggle with myself between ford mustang convertible or jeep wrangler with removable roof. Mustang gets slightly better gas miles.

Yes you will need a car. We have all the major ones at the aiport (hertz, alamo, enterprise, etc)

we also have some indepedentn ones away from the airport that youʻll have to take a taxi to.

Kihei Rent-a-Car (10miles from the airport)

Kimoʻs rental car (2miles from the airport)

My friends went with the convertible and drove the road to Hana with it. Smiley winking I think that's what you should do.

    Jeeps:

Pros: off road tires for a few trails to waterfalls (not a lot), sit up higher, no roof

Cons: no place to put things and lock things up in (try not to leave things in the car at all)

    Mustangs:

Pros: Convertible top, a lockable trunk

Cons: regular tires and low ground clearance

    Economy Car:

    Pros: cheaper, lockable trunks

Cons: regular tires means low ground clearance

The big companies all rent the same cars so everyone knows which ones are rental cars so they are targeted by thieves. The smaller companies rent more regular cars, just with the company bumper ticker, and are a bit more incognito to thieves.

September is a very warm time entering fall, our trade winds tend to die so the beaches are AWESOME, but the sun is BLAZING so you will bake with the top down.

The road to Hana is SPECTACULAR in a convertible with tall waterfalls and huge trees. If youʻre super adventurous, a jeep would be ideal but theyʻre not necessary. If youʻre planning on just going to the beach and cruising the towns, a regular sedan is sufficient.

I didn't even think about the fact that there's nothing lockable in a jeep.

I'm so torn. I feel like being on vacation means I should have a fun can that can be roofless. Even in hot Florida we rent a convertible but we just rude with the too down at night but I don't know how much night driving I'll do in Hawaii.

Well you really donʻt want to leave anything in the car anyways so if jeeps equal fun for you (and honestly, jeeps are a blast) then do it.

Our nights are pretty warm, a light sweater will do. The sun sets at about 6:30 in September so chances are youʻll be driving in the dark a few times after dinners and such.

I use Priceline and bid. I got a great deal for 8 days last time. They do it through the big guys at the airport, so its super easy.

We're honeymooning in Maui in September and are renting a jeep. We went back and forth between a mustang and a Jeep but ultimately decided we wanted something totally different that we'd probably never otherwise drive. We don't plan to take a lot of stuff with us in the car besides what we'll need with us for whatever we have planned - a good excuse to pack light for activities! I actually found the best rate with Budget.

Kimberly, that's exactly how I feel.

Like I will never have a jeep in real life or probably ever need to rent one again....but I also worry because gas in Hawaii is so expensive and the jeep gets crappy gas miles.

Today's thrift had one for $529 after taxes (for 10 days) which is actually cheaper than the convertible on every site I found (budget is actually one of the most expensive places I've seen....though they did tempt me because they rent out camaros)

It ends up being like $250 more than renting a normal sedan but I feel like a jeep is just more special for such an awesome trip.

Mrs king, I've never driven a jeep before.....if it starts raining and I hve the roof off how hard is it to put it back on?

Not super hard, but you will have to get out of the car, run around to the back, throw the plastic top on and zip it/clip it on.

Is the mustang THAT great on gas mileage that it's going to make a difference? It's not like a Jeep vs. a Prius on MPG's.. If you really want the Jeep, it probably won't be a significant enough difference money-wise on gas. I think for me, the enjoyment will outweigh the cost!

Kimberly, you're so right. I tend to have that mentality of "oh I'll like it more, I'll just do it no matter the price" I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.

Mrs king, I think I am going to visit the Tiffany store in Wilaea (they have been jewelry than the one I work in)....I don't drink....but maybe lunch!
