Massage Envy

Pancakes, on August 28, 2014 at 1:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Do any of you have a membership to Massage Envy? I'm just wondering what you guys think of it. $60 a month seems like a lot. I usually only get about 3-4 massages a year. But deep tissue massages usually cost you $70 so I guess if the salon person by you is good, it's worth it. But, what does it mean when it says on their website that with the membership you can earn free massages and free upgrades? I have searched the site and cannot find anything further. I feel like there has to be something to entice people to join. Before reading the terms I figured a membership got you unlimited massages (knowing that most people wouldn't have time for more than 1 a month) but you only accrue 1 a month.

Thoughts? I have a gift card there and will ask them more. Just thought I would ask anyone who has a membership what they think.

I had it for a year (gifted to me). Unless you get stuff like this ALL THE TIME, it's not worth it. I had so many rolled over I was busting ass trying to book appointments for facials and massages. I never saw or got anything free or upgrades, so I would question that if/when you sign up.

So again, not worth it unless you already get more than one a month.

It's actually very very cheap here for a massage and I get deep tissue ones all the time. But Ashley is right, I have a very hard time keeping up with the monthly appointment. I don't have a problem using them up though because you can get two hour massages for appointments you do miss lol.

The free massages and upgrades, I believe, are if you refer people. I have never received anything free.

I think they just give you discounts on massages with a membership.

I will also add, I had the worst massage of my life there. I left with knots in places that weren't there when I walked in. It was horrible. Each place is different though so hopefully you dont have an issue.

I used to go to Massage Envy, but a lot of the people at the location I went to were just very unprofessional. There is another place, called Massage Heights, who I started to go to, and I did sign-up for their massages. It is $49 a month, and I hardly ever go for a massage every month. I have done several 2 hour sessions, and I have some saved up that I can use in the future (they haven't forced me to use the saved up ones even though my year is over).

Its not really worth it...with all the Groupons and Specials that other places have, you can get them for the same price if not cheaper and non member places.

ETA: I've been to a few of them and I have NEVER had a good massage there.

I don't really trust many of the chain massage places. I get massages every two weeks -- prescribed from my doctor for my anxiety (whoop whoop!). I go to a local place where four independent massage therapists practice. It's fantastic.

That price is pretty awesome for a massage, but I don't feel like you're getting the same type of experience as if you go to a one off or private massage therapist with their own business. I feel the same way about InSpa as well.

    I LOVE MASSAGE ENVY.

I've been a member since 2009 at the branch in my hometown.

    Pros:

    - Super relaxing

    - I look forward to it every month

    - $60 once a month on my CC is nothing

    - I can usually only make it to one massage a month (you can also combine sessions to include a longer massage and/or a facial if you get backed up with too many sessions)

    - I have a therapist there who is UNREAL. I fricon love him.

    - They're super accommodating for you. Lots of hours, lots of therapists with different specialties, you can transfer massages to other people if you'd like, couples massages, pregnancy massages, etc.

    Cons:

    - Turn over is crazy (at least at my preferred branch)

    - You may have to try some people out before you find your favorite therapists

However, my favorite therapist is LEAVING Massage Envy soon to start his own thing... so, I will be following him to a different, less convenient location because he's THAT fantastic.

He's going to be charging the same rates as ME, and I'll be able to go to him whenever. So can my husband without doing a session transfer, etc. It's just ONE flat fee to get a massage from him.

He's too talented at this point to stay there, so I'm following him, and probably ending the membership once it runs out.

P.S. They were also pretty understanding when I faced two lay offs in the past over a period of a couple of years. They allowed me to "discontinue" the membership until I was better able to pay for it.

Yeah I agree with rustic. I haven't had a single problem and with the large number of therapists there, I was able to find one I really really like. I'm pretty busy (full time work, full time school, full time mom) and I am able to find ways to make up the extra sessions. She's right about turnover though, that does happen....but there are SO MANY locations. In fact, when I thought I wasn't going to have enough time to use some of my sessions, I gave one to each of my bridesmaids.

I found an AMAZING therapist and she was 35-40 minutes south of me. But I kept going because she was great! But then she moved several states away because she was getting married! I don't know what she was thinking. Obviously I was more important than her fiance! Smiley smile The other therapists are decent there, but now that I moved 45 minutes south from my previous place, I can't justify a 1.5 hour for a just okay massage. I need to find a good one near our new house. Then, I found a great therapist at another location, but she left to go back to school! The nerve! Smiley smile

Thanks, everyone, for your input! I know locations will vary based on person, and I figured people would leave there often, but I was just wondering the general like-ability of the program.

At one point I was getting massages once a week. Since I'm a fitness instructor I always have a sore muscle on some part of my body. Plus, a great massage feels SO GOOD! I'm really particular about my massage though so my therapist has to be really good. I've been to ME twice. The first time, I hated the therapist. The 2nd time at a different location, I loved the therapist. I'd definitely do the once a month membership if I can find a therapist I like and a location that's conveniently located. Plus, my Flex Spending Account covers it so I don't have to pay out of pocket. How friggin COOL is that!!!
