Mason Jar as a cup for entire night?

Misty, on March 1, 2020 at 10:56 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
Hi Y’all! I’m currently planning for my 2021 wedding. We will be having an outdoor wedding in May. We have a budget of $10,000 and I’m trying really hard to not go over budget but it’s really hard! Recently I’ve been trying to figure out the easier way to do cups and plates. I keep going back and forth between plastic or glass. I would prefer to have glass. I saw that some people Give their guests one mason jar for the entire night to drink out of. I like the idea of this because we wouldn’t have to spend an arm and a leg on cups. I also like the mason jar theme. How do you feel about this? Does anyone have any experiences? Was the mason jar also used for the champagne toast? Or were champagne flutes given out for the toasts? I’m so confused on how that aspect would work.

We will be serving wine and beer only. There is no dishwasher or anything like that’s for our bartender to use. I’m also trying to be as “eco friendly” as possible not use plastic. I’m thinking I can rent plates which won’t be too expensive. But if I have to buy glasses for water, beer, wine, champagne etc... it going to add up so fast!
I would love to hear all of your thoughts or experiences!!

So I’ve seen weddings where they gave out mason jars or glasses as their favors but I think they still had other glasses for other drinks just because for instance people want a separate glass of water along with their soda or alcohol or whatever it is

You can go to dollar tree online they have free delivery to the store and get really cheap glass options

I would just get plastic if it’s between that or one cup the entire night. A lot of people like to change drinks and wouldn’t want to use the same cup. I also see drinks getting set down and forgotten about at weddings as well as glasses getting broken.

I'm generally double fisting a water and a drink. So I guess it depends on the guest.

I definitely feel that! I would most likely get some plastic cups to put next to the water station.

I hate drinking out of a mason jar, and I hate using the same glass when I switch drinks.

I would use bamboo or palm leaf flatware, have a mason jar or glass at each setting for the water, and use recyclable plastic cups for the booze. For the champagne you can get cute plastic flutes. Plastic is not ideal, but I do not find it reasonable to make guests reuse the same cup all night

With the choice between plastic or drinking wine/champagne out of a mason jar, I'd definitely go with plastic. I hate drinking out of a mason jar -- it almost always drips -- and using one, unwashed, jar for an entire night would gross me out. Also, wine is usually poured as a 5-6 ounce serving, so in a typical mason jar the wine going to be fairly low in the jar so I'm going to have to really tip the jar to drink from it and that's just awkward (see concern about dripping, above...). Like a pp said, I'm also going to be chugging water all night in addition to wine, so I'm going to need at least one additional glass. Finally, even if the mason jar is intended as a wedding favor, I'm not going to take it home, so you're likely to be left with a lot of used, sticky mason jars at the end of the night. I understand wanting to be eco-friendly, but without appropriate dishwashing facilities/staff, I think plastic is your much better option.

I've only seen this at one wedding and it didn't work. People used them for 1 drink and just asked for plastic cups because guests didn't want to wash out their cups in between drinks if they switched what they drink, and people don't keep track of their cups all night.

I am also planning a low-waste, sustainable wedding and I am adamantly against using single use plastics at the wedding. We are having a mobile bar that has the ability to wash glasses out and we are going to label the mason jars with chalkboard stickers so everyone's name is on their cup. Hopefully that will help guest keep track of their drink!

Is it possible for you to rent glassware in your area? I'm contemplating renting glass champagne flutes for a champagne toast, or possibly renting goblets that could be used for champagne/wine/water. Renting is a sustainable option, too.
