Marriage Workshop

futureMrsG, on June 5, 2019 at 7:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
My FH and I are both Catholics and will be attending our marriage workshop for a weekend next week. I was just wondering what to expect? Any tips? Thank you!

Is this Pre Cana? My fiancé and I did our pre Cana workshop and it was basically to get us talking about the big topics (money, future plans, kids, how to deal with problems, etc). We got workbooks and each chapter had a different presenter who spoke and we did some activities.

We have another workshop (Gods Plan to a Joyfilled marriage) which we are doing in two weeks.

Also my PreCana was a group of maybe 150 people so it was not stressful and to be honest half the room was on cell phones or not listening by the end of the 9 hour day

My experience was very similar. We split up into small groups,5 or 6 couples with a “head” person. We would go around and each have a chance to share about the topic we had just heard about. We then had an opportunity to talk privately with just our fiancé.
We did the Myers Briggs personality test and talked about that.
    Natural family planning
    money
acts of service/service in the community and church
    and I think conflict stuff.

Yes I believe this is the Pre Cana only ours will just be for one day because of our situation, we are both out of state getting married in California, so we don’t really have time to do the whole weekend or the 3 day meetings i believe. I hate talking in front of people thats why im just preparing myself and like what to talk about and stuff 😅

My FH and I did precana (I am not Christian). We did the 3 day thing.

I... did not enjoy it. It does appear to vary drastically depending on who runs it. Our was very poorly run, which didn't make my other issues with it better. Please keep in mind that MANY of the topics covered are covered by secular therapy, popular self-help books, and general good relationship practices, as it is.

Ours was a smaller gathering, so we got lectured for 20 minutes or more by a couple in their 70s, then wrote on our own for about 10 minutes (segregated by gender), then were supposed to talk to our FS for another 15-20. (This is where I found it utterly useless. That's not nearly enough time to have a good, decent talk.)

I hope the day-long one is more palatable. I wanted to do that one, but it's a moot point anyway. We passed precana, but the priest turned us down.

We did the one day Pre-Cana. It was run by a deacon and his wife who had once been on the verge of divorce so they knew what they were talking about. We had a small group of maybe 10-12 couples. There were 6 topics to cover. Each had an exercise in the workbook where we each answered the questions then discussed among ourselves. We didn't work in groups it was always one on one with our SO, no speaking to the whole group, which i was afraid I would have to do. Toward the end the deacon had everyone stand up and practice our vows. That was very intense but in a good way and we all did it at the same time so no one was the center of attention. I found it to be a good experience.
