Marriage Licenses

Danielle, on January 31, 2020 at 11:30 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
I am on the fence about a Nebraska or Kansas wedding. What happens if I buy the Nebraska marriage license, and end up having the ceremony in Kansas? Does it become null and void or does it just need to be signed in Nebraska?

I would just wait until you know what state you’re going to get married in! Getting a marriage license is really quick and simple

You need to apply for the marriage license wherever you’re actually getting married. Then the officiant will sign it and return it to the office/state you applied for it from.

I do believe you have to get the license from the state you are married in so I definitely would not get that until you settle on a location. Once you set a location, call the court house for that state and see what their requirements are.

I would imagine you'll know which state the wedding will be in by the time you're up to getting the marriage license. Most have to be filled out and returned within a few months of being issued or they're no longer valid.

It's also slightly different for every state, so I would make sure you read up on that. We're getting married in Missouri, and to our understanding the license has to be picked up in the county that we are getting married in.

Don't worry about the license until you find your venue. Your venue should be number one, everything will flow right after that. Smiley smile

The license has to come from the state you are getting married in. The license is only valid for 60 days (at least in PA), so you should have your venue and state decided by then. I would wait until you confirm which state you are getting married in. Each state is different and may have different requirements for the license.
