Marriage License

Lori, on August 7, 2019 at 9:25 PM Posted in Planning 2 12
Hi everyone!! I’m getting married in a different county then I live in, but still the same state. Would I get the marriage license in the county I am getting married in or the county I live in?

Usually the county you’re getting married in but for some states it doesn’t matter which county you get in it. I would call the clerk and ask!

This may be state specific. In my state (NJ), we can get the license at either place but the paperwork after the ceremony must be filed in the township the marriage took place.

Definitely look up your state and see. I live in CT, where we have to get our marriage license from the same county we marry. However, we are getting married in NH and for there, it doesn't matter what county you get it from regardless of what county you marry in.

It depends on the state! Where I live, it isn't required for your county to match the one you apply for the marriage license at

In Massachusetts you can get it in any county and submit it in any county. Our officiant is from another state so the only thing we had to worry about was making sure he got a certificate to perform the marriage in our state. He sent us a copy of it to bring with us when we filed for the marriage license and now all we need to do is pick it up.

Definitely look it up, just google "justice of the peace county, state" . We live in WI but are getting married in IL. We have to get our license in the county we are getting married in in IL. If we were to be getting married in WI we would get it in our resident county and be able to go to any county for the ceremony.

So by that do you mean that you can get it in any county in CT or NH? I'm from MA but am getting married in NH and I'm just confused. Do you mean I can apply for the marriage licence in any county in MA or any county in NH? Sorry, I'm just very lost !

Sorry for the confusion. If you're getting married in NH it doesn't matter where you go in the state of NH to get your marriage license. For instance, we are getting married in the White Mountains in North Conway, NH but for our convience we will be getting ours from Salem, NH.

CT is specific though. Whatever county you are getting married in, is the same county your marriage license must come from.
