Marriage license

Emma, on August 30, 2020 at 9:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 25
How many days before your wedding did you go apply and receive your marriage license? In my state marriage licenses are good for 60 days and are giving at the time of application. We are going tomorrow,09/31/2029, for our, 10/03/2020 wedding and I feel like we are going to early!

Oh now that makes sense! If we were doing a destination wedding then we would have to wait till the day before. We are getting married like 3 miles from our clerk of courts office 😂

Our licenses never expire either, so we are getting ours in September and keeping it in our lockbox for March. It's one less thing to think about closer to the date and since covid has made the clerks office by appointment only we had plenty of time to schedule a time that worked for both of us to go in together.

We did a month out. Licenses here in Texas they are good state wide but have to be filed in the county they were applied in. We had health insurance problems so this came into play.

I think they are good for 90 days and there is a waiting period unless you take a powerpoint webinar that was bull. It paid us to do it but they needed to pay us more with how bad it was. It was poorly executed and there were a lot of errors in spelling and grammar. And the guy was definitely in it for the money and used his rough draft for the final presentation. He noticed a major error in the presentation while he was talking and said, "whelp, oh well." and continued. He looked like wish.com version of Gordon Ramsay. My husband and I definitely use the advice from the presentation but we both still get a laugh from how bad it was. I give him a d minus if I was his teacher based on presentation.

The day before person has nerves of steel and I both admire you and fear you all at the same time. I don't think we can play poker together.

My advice is double check the waiting period if there is one.

Here in AZ, or at least in my county, they last a year unsigned and 30 days after signed. We got ours in July and we’re getting married in November. We weren’t sure if things would shut down again or not, so we wanted to get it as soon as possible.

We had to do no more than 30 days. It's a pretty quick process.

Here in VA, licenses are good for 60 days. We had to schedule a virtual appointment (The appointment date was 2 weeks after we filed the application online). but the license still hasn’t made it in the mail yet. We were told we’d have it within a week. Wedding is in 11 days. I may have to make a special request to stop by the Courthouse and pick up a copy. It sounds unusual that something would take 3 weeks to arrive by mail in the same city 🤔
Just make sure you are familiar with the specific timeline requirements of your State and county. Best wishes!

    This had me LOL’ing 😂
But seriously though, your experience sounds like a nightmare! I’m so sorry! We are getting married in New Orleans. Luckily, it is a very popular place for destination weddings and elopements, so they make it super easy on couples! No classes or webinars... You just walk in with your documents and apply for your license. Typically, there is a 48 hour waiting period, but they waive it for out-of-state couples. And all their officiant‘s are trained in the license/waiving process, so they handle everything for you for the most part. It sounds like they try to make it as easy as possible for out-of-towners to get married there. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 it’s as easy as it sounds!!!

We're getting married out of state and while we could fly down and get it now (It's good for 60-days), we'll actually end up getting 3-days in advance based on our arrival into the state.

The webinar also took $50 off the fee. We paid $25 for a one day course. So, technically we got paid $25 to do it and more cushion with the marriage license. We don't regret it but neither of us think that was a well put together course.

I mean some of the info was right on most of it but on some of the slides the pictures covered the words. I don't believe in personality test so, we skipped it and faked that section of the quiz. But they had other useful sections on communication, conflict resolving and money. I have seen 5th graders do a better powerpoint.... There are other providers of this course but we didn't want to pay twice.

We are going on Thursday to get ours with our wedding on September 12th. We have 30 days before it expires and we also have a 5 day waiting period (this could be waived for an extra $25).

Our wedding is September 26th and we're going this Wednesday, the 2nd, for our marriage license. In Tennessee, they're only good for 30 days.
