Marriage License?

Randi, on July 13, 2019 at 10:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
My future MIL brought this up, we’re both residents in North Dakota but we’re getting married in Minnesota. Would we get the license in our county or the city we’re getting married?

That’d be something you’d have to ask your County and the county you’re getting married in. My fiancé and I had discussed getting married in Wichita, KS, and we would’ve had to get a KS license. We live in Plano, TX, and have decided to marry here. Now our marriage license is from TX!

Most places you have to acquire the license where the wedding will take place. We had to get ours for Delaware and we're both Illinois residents.

It definitely depends on the state, in CO a marriage license can be obtained and used in any county but must be returned to the county you got it from. Every state has different rules and requirements. Check with MN requirements since that’s where you’re getting married! Good luck!

You get the license in the place where you're getting married. State laws vary on whether it has to be the same county, or just the same state, as the place where you're getting married.

Also in VA, getting married in NY. You have to get a NY license. You can get it up to 30 days in advance, but cant get married until 24 hrs after you get the license. That's for Erie county at least.m, but I'm guessing it probably similar in other counties. I just googled Erie county marriage license. You could do the same for whichever county your getting married in.

Typically its minimally the state you are getting married in. We are both WI residents but are getting married in IL (where we are both originally from). We had to go down the the county we are getting married in within 60 days of the wedding to get our license (with a 24 hour wait period), and we can only use it in that county. If we were to have gotten married in WI it would have been a 5 day wait period but we could have gotten married anywhere in the state of WI. It's pretty easy to google it, I just googled Justice of the peace - county and it brought me right the the county gov site page I needed.
