Marriage License

FutureMrs, on April 24, 2016 at 8:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Hello Everyone!

So the planning of my wedding is going well. The only issue I've run into so far and am wondering if any of you have done this is putting your parents middle names wrong on the marriage license? I'm guessing I'm going to have to take it to be changed Smiley sad Basically what happened is that my fathers middle name is only James. I put my brothers middle names by accident which are James Micheal. I feel like such a idiot now for doing this but for some reason I was so sure that those were my fathers middle names when we got the license. Do you even need to put your parents middle names to begin with? Is this something that could be left as long as mine and my FH information is correct? Has anyone here made a mistake like that?

Hi FutureMrs, I think you would probably be best off by contacting the county in which you obtained the license. I'm always of the mindset that you're better safe than sorry!

Yes you need to put your parents middle names. I think this is mostly to ensure identity verification.

Now- is this on the marriage certificate where there's the mistake? When I went to go pick mine up they said they could fix any errors right away (Massachusetts) before the certificate becomes the actual marriage license.

I'm in alberta canada. What happens is we get a marriage license first which is signed during the wedding and then that gets sent off and we apply for a marriage certificate. My FH didn't put his parents middle names on the license so that's why I also asked about the middle names. Im going to call and see. The clerk did not say we needed to put middle names specifically. The form said last name and legal given first name (s). He doesn't know his father's middle name as he left when he was very small

I would wager that it doesn't actually matter, but contact the office where you got your license just to be on the safe side.

Thank you! I'm not so worried about it being something I have to fix. I'm mainly worried about the lady at the church giving me a hard time about it as I would need miss a bit of work and go pick it up from the church and bring it to the registry office. She gave me a bit of attitude about one letter missing from our witnesses last name from an email we sent them with the witness information on it Smiley sad It felt like attitude but maybe I took it the wrong way I'm hoping. Once this is all taken care of I will feel a bit better I think!

Thank you everyone! As for if my FH should have included his parents middle names? Does anyone here know if he should have? Or is it just as long as they have the first and last name? I know his mom's middle name but we would need to find out his dads middle name.

Any question regarding a license should only be answered by the clerk who is issuing the license. In NJ, every town (that's how it's done here) is a little different; while I can give general advice on the ins and outs, you really need to have it be correct before it's used.

This is a legal document; don't take the word of any stranger on the internet. Call the clerk.

In addition to it being a legal document, years from now when a descendant is tracking down her/his family tree, s/he will be relying on the marriage license info and it may cause confusion if it is different from other documents.

    Get it corrected.

In Florida, the license does not ask for your parents' names.
