Marriage License

Alli, on July 31, 2020 at 9:21 AM Posted in Planning 0 16
For those doing a wedding in another state… Are you applying for your marriage license in the city you live in or the city and state that you are getting married in? Anyone having delays with this process?
Thank you!!

We live in NC and getting married in FL - By law we must have a FL marriage license which our officiant will sign off on and register.

Most states require you to apply for a marriage license in the county or state where the ceremony will take place.

As for delays, you'd really have to check the State / County website for updates. I looked at our county and they have it clearly noted they are open and giving out licenses.

It should be the city, state (usually by county) in which you will be getting married. We did not experience any delay getting our paperwork. The county we were applying in switched to an online process pretty early on and we applied asap. The paperwork actually came about 5 days earlier than we expect it.

You have to get your license in the state that you are getting married in. Some states even require you to get your license in the city you are getting married in. We got married in Pennsylvania, but we live in Maryland. We were able to get our license anywhere within Pennsylvania so we drove to the closest city in Pennsylvania to get our license.

Thank you!! They do have the application online; however, required to pick it up in-person. Which leaves us only 1 business day, eeks!

Thank you, it appears the county offers online application; however pick up has to be in-person, which only leaves us 1 business day to pick it up, yikes!

My sister got her marriage license today and Texas, but she’s getting married in Alabama. She double checked with the county clerk and they told her she can do that as long if there’s a valid officiant who will sign and send the documents back to Texas. 🤷‍♀️
