Marriage License vs Marriage Certificate

Star, on July 23, 2019 at 1:01 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 2
What’s the difference?
Is the license like the application you get from the county courthouse in the town you live to sign and receive the “certificate” in the mail after you’re married ?

Is this “license” also the paper that you, your SO, and officiant sign on your wedding day?
so confused and need help on clarifying please 😂

Yes that’s correct. You should call your township department of health though to find out their rules. In New Jersey we had to apply for our marriage license and then there was a 72 hour waiting period before we could pick it up. But to get our marriage certificate, we just had to sign the license at the wedding, and then bring it to the DOH in the town we got married in. Then they printed the certificate for us on the spot.

Every state is different though so just make sure you find out what yours does!
