Marriage License - Va/nc

Chelsea, on June 29, 2020 at 8:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I am planning a wedding for next summer, so I know this is jumping the gun — I just want to get my ducks in a row.

We currently live in Virginia and will be after the wedding as well, but we are getting married in North Carolina. In which state do we apply for a marriage license?

You get a marriage license where you’re getting married.

North Carolina. Virginia law says you must obtain a marriage license in the state that the wedding happened in.

The county doesn’t really matter in NC, not sure about other states. I’m currently living in NC, my FH is in NC just briefly (he’s been in central-VA, but got a job down here even though our house just over the border in VA isn’t ready yet). We’re getting married in my hometown and I’ll be moving to VA directly after the wedding and starting all that lovely paperwork.

As others stated above, the county does not matter in NC. I live in NC and got married in a different county than which we live. We obtained our license in the county we live. There was no issue.
