Marriage license in different city

Christina, on May 2, 2018 at 10:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 16
We are getting married in one city...but my fiancé lives in another city...the only time a marriage license at the county clerk office is open is M-F & my fiancé cant come here (where we are getting married)... the only other option I have is if I drive to where he lives & we can go to the county clerks office there on a Friday... do you have to get a marriage license from the city you will be marrying in? Or is another city ok if it’s in the same state?

I would double check, but I know that in my state (NC) you can get a license anywhere in the state, as long as you get married in the state! So you should be fine to go to you future hubby’s city!

It depends on the state. We just got our marriage license on Monday! We live in ohio where we are also getting married. We had to get the license in the county we live in even though we are getting married in a different County.

It looks like you are in CA. According to what I found on the LA site regarding this marriage licenses are for the entire state and not just the county you applied in. You could always call and confirm the with the county clerks office just to make sure the info is correct.

Phone the County Clerk's office rather than rely on information from Internet strangers.

I think you can get your license at any County Clerk's office in the County

You can even apply online and just go once to pay for and pick up the license.

It depends on your State.. In Minnesota, you can get the license in any county and you are fine regardless of the county you marry in. I think you probably should look this up based on your location just to be sure.

Yep, it's specific to your state and county. Where I live you get the license in the county that you are marrying in. Call and ask.

I’m pretty sure in California it doesn’t matter the county you get the license in but I would call the clerks office to verify.

You always have to get the license in the state where you are getting married. Whether you have to get it in the city where you are getting married depends on applicable state law. Massachusetts, for example, allows you to get a license anywhere in the state, even if it's not the same place you are getting married. But other states require that you get it from the city or county where you are getting married. You'll need to check with your own state.

Generally, marriage licenses are issued by state. I would call to speak with the office from where you intend to purchase your license to confirm, however.

The laws are different in every state. Call the clerk’s office and double check online.

Call the clerks office because in Illinois you have to get at the county you're getting married in even if you live in a different county. We ended up having to pay twice and cancel the first one as we got it in the county we live in but found out it has to be from the county we are getting married in. Looks like it's dependent on the State.

I know the state matters for that but I don't think the city matters. Maybe it gets down to county but definitely not city as not all cities have clerks offices to even get them. If your fiance comes to the city you are getting married in and there's a clerks office then just get it there and you know for sure you'll be good.

Every state has its own laws. You need to call the city clerk where your wedding is and ask them, you can't ask strangers on the internet this question.

In NY, you get your license in the town where you live, not the town where the wedding is, if the wedding is also in NY.

I've looked into it as I'm getting married on June 16th. It says to get it from the county you live in and it needs to be a public marriage license. I'm getting mine from LA county and I'm getting married in Temecula, CA. In LA when we go to return the signed license, we can only go to one place so our marriage can be recorded.
