Marriage certificate/license

Arielle, on May 20, 2019 at 8:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
Hey all!! I have another question for you lol. My fiancé and I are getting married on Oct 10th of this year. We live in Florida but our wedding is going to be in NC, Banner Elk to be exact. Do we have to get the marriage license/certificate in North Carolina to get married there or can we legally get married in FL prior?
i have looked a few websites but they don’t really answer my question. They just say what is required when applying for a marriage license in that state.

You get the marriage license in the state you’re getting married in. Every state differs on whether it needs to be in the county you’re getting married in, whether there is a waiting period, what the requirements are etc. Your best bet would be to call the clerk in the county you’re getting married in.

Call the office to find out better, but when my fh and I looked into getting married in KS instead of TX we would’ve had to buy a KS license

Congratulations! We are almost date twins! I'm getting married on October 9th. Smiley smile So cool to see someone else doing a weekday wedding, too!

Anyway, as mentioned above, you will need to apply for your marriage license in North Carolina. Best wishes! Smiley heart

You have to apply for your license in NC, the county doesn’t matter but after the wedding we have to drop off the license back at the same office we applied.

The plus side is NC doesn’t have a waiting period so you can apply the day before if you won’t be there until right before the wedding

You need to apply for a marriage license in the county you are getting married in. If you are having a destination wedding and just want the wedding to be a symbolic celebration you could get married in Florida and then have the whole symbolic thing in North Carolina.
I'm not sure if all people having Mexico weddings do this or not, but my friends got legally married at the courthouse and then went to Mexico and had a ceremony, then came back for a reception.

This is not answering your question... we just have a lot in common! I used to live in FL. I am getting married October 5th in NC. And we are doing our Minimoon in Banner Elk and will be there during your wedding! How fun?! The mountains are beautiful that time of years. We chose a mountain venue as well! Congrats and happy planning!

Unless you're going with a specific religious denomination, I don't think there's anything that says you HAVE to do the formal legal part at your wedding. My best friend was legally married a year before she got ceremonially married (residency reasons). She's told me that it didn't make their wedding any less special at all.

We are getting 'legally' married at a courthouse/county clerk's office in our home state (Illinois) a few weeks before our wedding, but having our wedding/marriage ceremony after that in another state (Indiana). We'll already be married by law, but are emotionally committing to each other in front of friends and family. Where we sign the paper isn't important to us. Smiley smile It also means we don't have to stress about remembering that license the day of... Maybe when we do the courthouse thing, we'll have a nice dinner, but the paper work is just that to us.

I would ask your venue! Ours was very knowledgeable about who could legally marry us in Indiana, but also assured us that getting pre-legalized would be just fine. Granted, we're paying for the venue, so... Smiley smile
