When are you signing your marriage certificate? We don't have a lot of time after the ceremony, so I have been thinking of incorporating it into the ceremony...but am falling short of when or how. Obviously, it would be before we kiss, but should we do it before or after the unity candle? Do our witnesses sign then too or just my FH and I? We're thinking this may be a good opportunity to honor our mothers and have them sign at witnesses, since we each have two MOH and best men.

I guess what I'm questioning is the logistics of this. I've been to one wedding where it was done and it was awkward. What can be done to make it not so awkward and actually a part of the ceremony?

Here in the Chicago burbs, Lake County & Cook County, Bride and Groom's signatures are not required. This holds true for the marriage license and commemorative marriage certificate. I as the officiant sign both after the actual ceremony and the license goes with me so I can file it with the clerk's office. As for the certificate I encourage my couples to store it in a hard backed binder in the bridal suite so it doesn't get lost or damaged in the ensuing festivities. Best wishes!

It really shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes...

We signed ours at some point during the reception. I remember the photographer and officiant coming and getting us to sign it. We had to have three witnesses and we all went inside, signed, and it was done in like two minutes. I don't think anyone missed us.
