Marriage Announcements

Jennifer, on November 28, 2020 at 9:10 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
Hi all- got married last weekend! As devastated as I was to not be able to have my original wedding with so many friends and family I hold dearly, we had a small ceremony (that we had 150 people view virtually!) and dinner with about 40 people instead of the 200 we had originally invited. I’ve been debating on whether or not we should send out a marriage announcement to those we had to uninvite due to Covid. Has anyone else done this? Is it too much? Appropriate so they know we’re thinking of them? I’d appreciate any thoughts.

I think a marriage announcement would be a good idea! You could combine it with a holiday card.

I haven't had to uninvite anyone but I plan on sending marriage announcements out.

Typically you would only send an announcement to those who were not invited at all (so not virtual guests) - however, under the circumstances, and considering you had to disinvite people, I would think it would be much appreciated

Marriage announcements are customarily sent out after the wedding to those who were not invited but you still want them to be aware of the day. If you don't want anyone to know then don't send any.

But it doesn't make sense to send them to the ones who watched the ceremony online.

Off topic but did you use a service to do the virtual part or did you do it yourself on zoom or something similar?

Hi Jenn - we hired someone to do it which was worth every penny. Our videographer suggested him. He did it live on YouTube and now it’s still there for us to view after the fact. In addition, my parents and several of our guests are deaf, so we had hired an interpreter. He did Picture in Picture for our ceremony so people viewing remotely could still see the interpreter and follow what was being said. Given the circumstances, we were so happy we hired him to do this instead of trying to handle it ourselves. By doing it this way, we didn’t have to worry about things like guests not muting or knowing how to use the platform. All anyone had to do was click on the link. No logging in or anything was necessary and we shared on our social media, created an online event on FB and emailed/texted it to all of our uninvited guests.

I agree, a marriage announcement/holiday card combo would be really sweet! A cute photo of you two at the wedding and the it saying “Happy Holiday from the new Mr. and Mrs. XYZ” would be really nice. Not gonna lie, if I got something like that, I would put it on my fridge lol!
