March 2021 Postponement?

Maggie, on July 20, 2020 at 1:33 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

Hello all,

My FH and I got engaged in March, right before Covid hit. We set a date for March 20, 2021 and have already put a deposit down with our venue. We are only going to invite around 60 people to begin with, but it still seems like we'd be taking a gamble by holding the ceremony and reception in March. A lot of our guests are elderly family members. So, now we're toying with the idea of holding a small ceremony with just our wedding party and parents, either on our original date next year or even sooner. March seems so far away, but at the same time, things are still so up in the air I don't want to do any planning. Has anyone with an early 2021 wedding date already made the call to either postpone or have an alternative ceremony like we're thinking? Thanks so much!

I'm March 28, we've talked about postponing but nothing is set in stone. We are waiting for NY to give some sort of guidelines as far as guest count and also guidelines from our venue. Right now we have about 165.

I’m March 27 and as of now, we are planning as usual with some precautions though. With that, we do have a plan B and a plan C. We have a guest list estimate of 140 but if state policy calls for a reduced guest count, we’ve decided who to cut. And if count is too low, we’ll postpone. Have a backup plan in case and discuss with your fiancé how he feels.
A precaution I took was hiring a florist with no or low minimum. I turned a florist down and explained that if the wedding is reduced, the amount of flowers for wedding party (3 are out of state) and decor may be reduced and may not meet minimum anymore. I also want photo booth but haven’t booked yet as I do not know how comfortable people will be taking pics with each other sans masks (no point in making a silly face under a mask) and using shared props. That I will find out when the time comes.

I think for now you are safe to go ahead and continue your planning. There is a good chance that a vaccine might be available by then so I think it's still worth giving your date a shot.

I agree that planning with caution is okay at this point, and thinking about Plans B and C wouldn't hurt. At least you know about the risks going in and won't be blindsided.

As a PP mentioned, it is a very good idea to look at lines about minimum spend in all of your contracts. I'm not sure which vendors you have booked yet or what services you're looking to hire out, but aside from venues, everyone from florists to makeup artists can have a minimum spend (or minimum number of people in a wedding party).

When we were picking venues, we were deciding between 2, and fortunately went with the one that didn't have a minimum spend. Now that we're scaling back our guest list significantly, that really helps.

I rescheduled my 7/11/20 wedding to 3/28/21. We're having a very small wedding next month. I don't think it'll be a problem, but I'd just proceed with caution.

My 6/29/20 wedding was postponed to 3/28/21 and I have high hopes. We're only inviting 50-60 guests so I think that will help us out. By then there should hopefully be some sort of treatment or vaccine and more information available. I am holding off buying things for the wedding especially with the date just in case. Regardless I am getting married I can't deal with postponing and re-planning a wedding again.
