Manhattan/NY Style Reception Schedule

wedting, on June 27, 2017 at 12:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Hi all -

I'd like to have a Manhattan/NY style reception (i.e. dancing, speeches, etc. in between each course rather than all food, then all dancing). I'm having trouble finding an example schedule online that includes order of events plus times to give the caterers/band - does anyone have a good example of what they used?

For reference:

- Our reception will go from 7:00pm - 10:45pm

- We are having 3 courses (salad, entree, and dessert)

- Events to fit in: FOB speech, MOH speech, BM speech; first dance; father/daughter dance; mother/son dance; cake cutting

TIA!

Didn't you just post this the other day? There is no such thing in Manhattan as this style of wedding, which everyone told you then.

A.L. - that was a different user, but here is the post and responses for reference:

Stephanie - are you trying to get the special dances and toasts in during dinner? Or are you looking to have all guests dancing in between courses? If it's just toasts and special dances then you can easily schedule those throughout the dinner service. If you're looking for have different dancing blocks then I'd talk with your DJ or band about the best timing!

@A.L. - Actually, today is my first time posting to the forums, but thank you for your kind response and your warm welcome to the WW community.

@WWLynnie - We are hoping to have the dances, toasts, and guest dancing during the dinner service, so I'll check with the band and see if they have any suggestions. And the original post you provided is super helpful, as it sounds like a number of people have done that and gave some scheduling advice. Thanks for adding the link!

@OP, sorry for the confusion. Someone posted literally this post almost word for word the other day. It isn't a New York thing to do.

Yeah, AL posted something similar on mine. that is how my band referred to it when i asked for dancing between courses. i have no idea if that is actually what they do on the east coast or not.

i did some investigating on my own and found this: https://www.eastcoastband.com/classic-new-york-style-wedding-timeline/

maybe that will be helpful to you, OP.

@Ella - that's so helpful, thank you! I'll probably try to move up the parent dances so they don't happen so late in the evening, but it's a great template to work off of.

@catlady5x - thank you! I've also loved the weddings I've been to with this flow. The party really goes all throughout the night! Best of luck to you as well Smiley smile

My advise is to watch 4 weddings. You will see the differences from East Coast weddings compared to other areas.

I can tell you some difference from weddings I've been to else where. The food is extremely important in the East Coast. The cocktail hour is the main event. Look at east cost venues such as IlTulipano or il villagio which are consider moderate priced and have their menu online 10 - 12 Stations is standard, plus 10 -15 passed apps.

If you want to go high end, look at the Venetian and The Palace.

Open Bar is a must! I actually don't know of a venue who doesn't offer open bar as part of the package.

Buffet are Freud upon, used for Bridal Parties and Baby Showers.

We do 5 courses after the cocktail hour and most do Viennese hour.

Next big item is music, you must have a great DJ or band.

In regards to speeches I think its the same everywhere. It may vary culturally.

Usually, we bring in a performer or Act/Surprise. Either the bridal party will have something planned or Brazilian dancers will come out to get the party started.

After the Cake cutting there is a Flambé show.

Everything is over the top, the only thing that varies place to place is the quality and service.
