Making your own Veil

Keisha, on November 1, 2017 at 3:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Hello

Has anyone made their own veil? How difficult was it? Did you need a sewing machine? I would like a cathedral length veil with lace edging and some crystals. I have a little under a year to my wedding so I am thinking this is something I can attempt. Thanks!

I wouldn't use a sewing machine, I'd either go in by hand or use a serger. It depends on the type of tulle or lace that you are using. Check out and see if there are any sewing workshops in your area.

My grandma is making mine, she's not using a sewing machine but is hand stitching the lace edging and beading with invisible thread. It looks difficult AF but she used to be a seamstress and keeps saying it's "time consuming but easy!"

    Invisible thread is a bitch.

I wish I had the talent to make my own veil. I remember a friend of mine's cat destroyed her veil the day before her wedding and her sister made a brand new one in a few hours. She didn't use a sewing machine, she did everything by hand. I tried to youtube and see if I could, but I gave up and bought a non-used cathedral veil on a wedding resale group for $25.

My mom made her veil and my sisters but her hands are not what they used to be and the length I want is much longer than what she has done. I wasn't sure if it was something I should research more or a girl you crazy kinda thing lol. I will look into it and maybe start in the new year. I will have enough time to buy one if its an epic fail

I'm making my own birdcage. There's plenty of tutorials/videos on YouTube or the internet to help, but if you can take a class that would be better.

I looked into making mine (cathedral drop veil with lace edging) but by the time I fractured in cost of supplies and my own time (because hand stitching with invisible thread sucks!) I decided it would be more cost effective to but one. I got mine for 140 from Blanca veils on Etsy.

Hand stitching is the way to go with tulle (nylon or silk). A sewing machine and/or serger will chew it up without any kind of stabilizer.

To be honest, unless you are applying appliques or beading or making a different style of veil like a Juliet cap, there is no real need to sew at all besides attaching it to the comb. It's all about the shape that you cut out.

YouTube is a wonderland of veil tutorials.

Are we talking blusher or Cathedral? Or something in between? Anything more than a blusher, I’d step back and look at someone else doing it or purchasing it

I looked into it, but the cost of supplies was going to be quite a bit (plus your time). I bought a gorgeous cathedral length veil on amazon for $50 instead.

My mom plans to make mine. She made her own veil and it will be something very special for both of us. She's planning on hand stitching it. I can't sew worth a damn so that's all of the advice I have. Good luck!

I’m looking at a full cathedral. Cost is a factor but I also think it would be nice to make something. This will probably be my only DIY for the wedding. I also have to take my skill level into consideration though.

For those asking, invisible thread is a finer version of fishing wire that you sew with. It can cut your hands to shreds though.

If you end up deciding not to make your own, I'd consider asking your seamstress (if using an independent one). Mine custom made mine for $30, any length.

@Robyn that is great advice. If you are really sold on making your own veil try it out on a test item before you commit to buying a lot of tulle and lace.

I thoroughly researched how to make a drop fingertip length veil, similar to Kate Middleton's, and even got the invisible nylon thread for a serger. My mom expressed some reticence at my using her serger though so I checked out Etsy and found pretty much what I was looking for for about the cost of materials (lace is expensive). I used the shop "Dream up Wedding", but it looks like she only does birdcage and elbow length veils like I purchased. You can google how-to's, but you might be able to also find something similar on Etsy for a reasonable price.

weddingbee.com has some user-made tutorials. From what I've seen, its pretty simple to make the structure if you have some sewing skills. Beading takes considerable skill. Lace is probably more doable. Ill probably ending up making mine with Mr mom because my dress is red and gold, so I want a gold veil.

I purchased a cheap veil on Amazon. I took off the lace from my grandmothers dress by hand, whitened it, and am going to hand tack it to the veil. I'll post photos when I'm done Smiley smile

I'm buying my veil from Blanca..plain pale blush. And then I'm sewing appliques on.. Hand-stitch. I know my machine will eat up the tulle.
