Making wine

Hey,

So it's going to be like, IDEK how long until a wedding is possible. No groups >25 until early next year at least where I live. Even though it would be outside: yeah, no. I have friends across the country and abroad that I'd want to come too.

Anyway! Lots of time to plan.

I like to be thrifty but I also just like creating stuff and DIY things, for fun and to make things more special. My latest thing I thought I'd check out is making wine. My partner used to brew meads/ciders (he has many bottles left that we will probably use for a toast!), has basically everything we need other than juice kit and bottles/corks/corker. It actually seems a fair amount more simple than beer which is why I looked into it. I had no idea that you could really do it pretty simply, and that wine kits are even available. It's also cool that this would be a thing you could do in advance unlike cooking (or even brewing beer to a certain extent). It would be a cool thing to learn together (tho my partner has a leg up on this for sure)!

Anyone ever do this? Venue is a private residence btw, they've had a local cidery come sell at events with a keg there before, they said homebrew won't be an issue. Would love some recommendations from where you've bought from if you tried (btw- looking to make the good shiz. no super sweet or fruit wines)

My dad used to make wine when I was younger and has been doing homebrew for as long as I've been alive and is actually making all the beer for the wedding. If you haven't made wine before I definitely recommend a practice batch or two because in my experience homemade wine has a much harsher taste to it, we always ended up using it to make sangria.

Oooh! I've tried a few homebrews by friends but never wines! You've got plenty of time until the wedding, so why not start playing around with it and see how the wines turn out?! 🍷🍇

I've researched a bit more and lucky to have two major distributors of juice/grapes/etc within an hour either way.

So we will try something for sure. Also might get my old job back doing farmers markets for a distillery- we are talking about doing a trade rather than strict payroll which works for us both here- yiup, the DIY alkys are looking good rn.

@Taran do you know if your dad was using kits, or juice/grapes? I'm thinking I will do a combo of juice (since it's cheap at the distributors near me) plus a lug of grapes (not as overwhelming as pressing the whole thing).

I think that sounds fun, but I would also be worried about time for aging. My husband's family made wine at a nearby vineyard once and the wine tasted much better after it had aged 1-2 years compared to when it was new.
