Makeup

Yesterday I decided to try out a MUA that I've been considering to book for the wedding. I asked for a "bright, natural, shimmery look". I was really disappointed since it's pretty dark and dramatic which is not at all what I asked for but FH said he liked it and that I was being too harsh. I'm typically pretty plain and basic with my makeup so I might just be biased and not used to a face full. Need some honest thoughts/opinions?!

I think it looks really nice but I do agree that it is a bit dark and nothing like you had asked for. Did you express your concerns to your MUA? 1

Well it’s shimmery, but I wouldn’t say it’s bright. You’re getting married in the summer so I totally understand why you want it to be bright and natural. If you’re going more natural, I would do a neutral eye with eyeliner and the lashes. I think that lip color looks really good on you!

You look really really pretty!!!! However, I don’t feel it’s anything that you asked for. As I do this for a living, I would have never done a dark color on your eyes.

I would ask for another trial because you are not happy with what she did. Find some inspo pictures on Pinterest. If you type in “natural wedding makeup” a bunch of stuff comes up.

You are paying her, and as a stylist, we ALWAYS want our clients to be the happiest they can be, because people are going to ask who did your services!!

I think she did a great job. You have dark features and I don’t think the darker color looks overly dramatic on you.

I can can see why you might be disappointed since you asked for brighter colors. I wouldn’t hesitate to try and give her a second chance though. You look beautiful.

I think you look gorgeous but I agree, not at all what you asked for. I wasnt vocal with concerns with my first artist and I went to a different artist for another trial and really spoke up then and there and she was happy I did! Like the previous PP said, any good artist will want you to be happy and wont take offense to any adjustments needed. Would you be comfortable providing feedback on it to her so that you dont have to try to find a new artist?

Keep in mind most will go darker for a heavily photographed event, to keep you from looking washed out and so it will show up in pictures. This look may come out more natural looking in photos

Thanks everyone! I do think she did a good job but it was just not what I had pictured or described so I guess I was just shocked. When she showed me the mirror I said "Oh wow, it's a lot darker than I expected" and she said she thought it would help my face pop and not look too washed out. I could try again with some specific pictures of what I'm looking for. Thanks for the input!

Yes, that's exactly what she said! It does make sense honestly but it just felt so heavy and dark initially

I'm a light makeup person, and always always shocked when I get my makeup done and hate it at first😂😂😭 but then I love it in pictures.
I would show her pictures of what you're wanting, and ask her to explain what she's doing that "looks" different vs how it will come out in photography.

I’m a makeup junkie and I have helped friends with event makeup when they haven’t been able to hire it out, so I’m hoping my non-professional but somewhat knowledgeable opinion will be helpful.
    1. You look gorgeous.
    2. 1 doesn’t matter because that’s not the look you asked for. Most artists want you to be happy with their work and will ask you at a trial session if you’d like to try a second look, what you do and don’t like, etc. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable demanding changes like that, so bring a bossy friend along if that sounds like you Smiley smile
    3. For what you described you wanted, I would suggest trying two soft palettes to see what you like most- one in a pink/mauve and one in a champagne/honey.
    4. Is there anything specific you do like about it - shape of the shadow, lip color, etc? Be clear with your artist about what elements are working for you.
    5. You want to feel enhanced, not costumed. Makeup artists can be expensive, so don’t settle for a look that doesn’t make you light up ❤️

Thank you so much for your feedback! I definitely think I should express how I feel but it has always been hard for me because I never want to sound mean or demanding. I love the way she did my face highlighting and the lip color, my biggest concern was the eyes. I think I'm going to find some examples I love to show her exactly what I expect. Thank you!

I wouldn't say it looks bad, but I also wouldn't say it looks bright and natural. I wouldn't be afraid to ask for a second try! If someone told me bright and natural, or even shimmery, I'd go with more silver/lighter tones rather than gold with accents of brown. Just my opinion. Smiley smile

To be honest, I don't think it looks dark. It doesn't look like she put much shadow on... Maybe if you did more of a muave-y/not straight up brown shade in the crease & a different shimmer, maybe a soft pink shimmer, could brighten it up. Making those changes would go well with the lip color you have on.

I actually think it is a calm and neutral look. Maybe ask her not add that dark color she has on the edge of your lid or ask her to choose a lighter tone. I feel that it is making it a smokey look.

I think you look pretty and the make-up is well done, but if it's not you it's not you. I think many make-up artists are so used to doing make-up that what looks light and natural to them (because it's not a full face contour with bold eyes and lips) still looks like a lot of make-up to the rest of us who don't usually put a lot on our face. Just using neutral tones doesn't automatically result in a natural look, and I agree this is more dramatic than bright. On my wedding day I want to look like "the most beautiful version of my authentic self" and this would be too much for me.

If you don't like it, voice your concerns to your MUA and see if they can tone it down a bit. Your FH says it looks good because it does, but you need to feel comfortable on your wedding day. You should feel gorgeous and like yourself, so if this isn't what you want, it's okay to say so!

I think it looks ok. I know the darker colors can seem too much but for the photos, but you’ll want that. However, I would have her focus on brightening up your eyes. Those dark circles should be visible on your big day. The cheeks need some definition to them not just the blush she used. In professional photos the eyes and the cheeks can get washed out. I'm like you. I don’t normally wear makeup and it’s hard to adjust to a full face. I would suggest trying out a few more until they can give you the right look for you.

Also, girl smile😁 you’re getting married!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and deciding to find a makeup artist for your big day. I know the execution of the look was not what you wanted which means you still have time to get it right. If you choose to do another consultation with the same artist or another send them inspirational images of what you want to look like. If you have a more skilled make up artists, you can send them your mood board for your wedding and they can create you a custom look using concepts from your inspirational photos and mood board.

In all honesty you do not look happy in the photos you posted from this trial, I would say this is not the look for you. Whether it’s a combination of this not being the artist for you or altering the look to the specifications that you would prefer.

I’m curious what city or state are you located in?

This is a great idea! I think you look great but it is darker on the eyes (I always think makeup looks too dark so I can understand). Showing examples of what you would like should definitely help her make changes!
