Makeup Frustrations: Vent and Request for Recommendations

Sophia, on November 30, 2019 at 5:11 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 18
**Bit of a vent**Hi fellow wedding planning people! Wondering if anyone can relate to being unable to find a good makeup artist. I used to work as a professional model (small-time stuff) and had my makeup professionally done all the time, but I always liked it better when I did it myself. Regardless, I took my friends’ advice and had a few trial runs with professionals. The results were so horrendous! I’m talking foundation too orange for my skin, fake tanner that made my neck stained and splotchy for a week, eyeshadow that crumbled down onto my cheeks, etc. I only have a blurry screenshot, but you can clearly see that my face is a totally different color than my neck, amongst other issues:
Makeup Frustrations: Vent and Request for Recommendations 1 I wanted to love it so bad!
Next, I tried DIY-ing it with the help of a friend in cosmetology school. I loved the results, because I love a dark, defined eye, bold highlighter, and bottom lashes. Makeup Frustrations: Vent and Request for Recommendations 2 I was told by some unkind (and unsolicited) commenters that the eyeshadow was unflattering, my eyes looked too “scared,” my brows don’t properly frame my face, and that my lips weren’t dark enough. I loved it, and I know this is wrong, but their negative comments are stuck in my mind when I think of this look. So it’s back to the drawing board for me. Should I keep searching for a pro? Are there any DIY tutorials that you’re planning on using? Have you experienced any similar makeup frustrations? If you’ve made it this far, thank you for listening. ❤️

Thank you! My lashes are quite light due to me being red haired. The lower lashes just give me a bit of definition that I like Smiley smile Thinking of using a color more subtle than jet black to soften it up.

I think the second pic looks best. I would say if you know how to do your own make up save your money and do it yourself. Or if you feel you need to then sit with a make up artist and tell them what you want and do not want and they can teach you how to best put on make up for the big day. That is what I plan to do and hope I like what she does. Sorry for the stress. Smiley sad

Thank you! I suppose we all experience some wedding related stress at one point or another. I just need to understand that I can’t please everyone and we all have different taste, and that’s okay! Your idea to consult with a pro sounds great. I wish you the best of luck!!

Yeah and it is easier said than done but you ultimately need to do what makes you happy and not others. I know my tastes are different than other brides but if what they choose made them happy and does not affect my money who care lol. Your day and you should feel comfortable with how you look. That's crazy that you've had so many frustrating trial runs. Smiley sad Are they people who specialize in makeup only? Or do they do both hair and makeup?

At least in my area, it seemed like most vendors clearly excelled at one over the other, if they were booking themselves as a HMUA. I ended up hiring a makeup artist who only does makeup after looking through pages and pages of potential vendor portfolios. I realized that I was very picky about makeup, but knew this artist was the one for me as soon as I saw her work. She's pricey, but worth it, because I don't want to DIY my makeup.

Do you have any inspo looks you're going off of? Or just doing what you like? I have a similar hair color and it was so challenging to find a proper inspo pic lol.

Honestly though, the only person that really needs to be happy with your makeup is you. If you feel good in it, it will shine through. Smiley smile

I feel you girl. I'm not very skillful when it comes to makeup tbh but I'd still rather doing my own makeup on my wedding day. Especially when I like the natural dewy look, while the MUAs in my area (from their portfolios at least) put on super thick powder and it's just in general overkill for my taste.

I like the makeup you do for yourself, and if you feel more comfortable in it, definitely go for it on your wedding day!

If you love your DIY makeup, then roll with it! I guarantee if you try another makeup look, someone else will have a negative opinion about it . So no need trying to please a bunch of others. I see the same thing where brides take a whole crew wedding dress shopping and then leave crying because they love a certain dress that a few in their crew don’t. Smh! I cant live life like that.

They were people who specialize in commercial photography makeup... the one pictured only spent about 20 minutes on me and it felt sooo rushed. I may need to follow in your footsteps and check out more diverse portfolios and pony up some more cash. It may be worth it!
Yes! I struggle quite a bit finding redhead inspiration photos. I tend to love Charlotte Tilbury products and the looks she does on her models. She’s a redhead herself and I find her products very ginger-friendly! Oh well. The search continues Smiley smile

Honestly! Bringing only my mother to my dress appointments was one of the best decisions. It’s so frustrating when brides tear one another down. I find it usually stems from their own insecurities. Still doesn’t make it okay. Thank you for your input!

They do commercial photography makeup and only spent 20 minutes on you?!

My trial was booked for 2 hours, but ended up taking about an hour and a half; it'll be 45 minutes on the wedding day. She took her time during the trial so that we could talk, and stopped at several points to show me her progress and to make sure I was happy with the direction.

Definitely going to have to check out this Charlotte Tilbury stuff!

I can so relate to this. People were critiquing my makeup but I felt like all of their suggestions were so terrible and so wrong for my coloring and my dress. I love a highlighted, dewy look as well. I think matte photographs well, but I still want some brightening on my face. Just because matte is trendy doesn’t mean it’ll work for everyone! At the end of the day, you know your face and your dress. I wish you the best of luck! Smiley smile

Wow! My MUA just slapped on some foundation, rushed contouring, and lots of dark eye makeup. I don’t mind a dramatic look but geez. Your MUA sounds wonderful! I’m happy for you!
Tilbury products are a holy grail for me. Quite pricey but so worth it!

The second pic is great! Go with your gut, people hate because they are jealous! You do what you feel most comfortable with!

I had two different makeup trials I didn't like either. It was pretty ridiculous - fake eyelashes falling off before the end of an hour, eyeliner sliding down my face, dark, not blended at all bronzer.... ugh. I settled on doing it myself with lots of help from YouTube tutorials and took full advantage of Sephora and Ulta return policies to find products that would work for me throughout the day.

I practiced many times in the weeks before my wedding and I felt beautiful on the day of my wedding and the pictures look great too! I think what's most important is that you're happy and comfortable with how your makeup turns out. Personally, I think the second photo looks great!
