Makeup Don'ts

Danielle K, on June 4, 2019 at 9:18 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 28

Please learn from my mistakes.

Do not hire a normal hair stylist from a salon for wedding hair and makeup because they will either be flakey since they do not have a contract or they way over charge (hundreds of dollars to compensate them being away from the salon before they even start charging for the services)

Do not hire a friend! If they are actually not very good it is hard telling them never mind. If there is drama (even when you are sure there never would be) you are going to regret asking them. Also people who aren't professional don't often know the difference between going out makeup and getting married makeup. (I seriously purchased a bunch of stuff on her recommendations and had to exchange it all because it was not at all my color ((seriously you do not cancel out red undertone skin with yellow undertone makeup!!)) or it gives major flash back!)

Do not think DIY makeup is really going to cost less than hiring a professional. I started out with 0 makeup. I maybe had a Walmart foundation and an expired BTS mascara, so in the past year with bad makeup experience after another, I have been buying different products testing them out to learn how to do my own makeup. I think I am finally there and have the right products but it has literally cost me thousands of dollars and I will now have the stress of doing it my self the day of.

Don't be stubborn like me and listen to advice from others!

side note my mm is doing my hair now and I finally know how to do makeup! Also I now have a makeup addiction so you win some you loose some lol

Totally agree with you except for hair as well!! I hired a family friend to do hair for the wedding and my trial with her was AWFUL. She was also charging me more than what was listed on her website, was flaky, didn't get a contract to me, wanted full payment up front, the lists goes on. She is FMIL's friend and I had to fire her which caused a TON of drama for a few weeks. Wish I had just avoided it from the beginning and not mixed business with family/friends.

Agreed. I hired my cousin (professional hairstylist) as my day of hair stylist for all of us, and she has been soooo flaky. All I can do is hope and pray she comes through on the actual day, because I don't have time to find someone else. Luckily her sister (another professional hairstylist at the same salon) is coming too. So I'm crossing my fingers that she will at least be professional.

Love this! thank you for sharing! I was alot like you and never had ANY makeup so ive been using ipsy to get a few samples and figure out how to use different things and what you like or don't like. For $10 a month I've found so many new things and am obsessed with trying them out. Also.. HELLO HIGHLIGHTER.. you can wear no makeup except some highlighter on the inner corner of your eye and on your cheekbones and you instantly look glam!

We did hair and make up at a salon and they were wonderful, so I wouldn’t necessarily worry about salon stylists being flaky across the board. Mine were absolutely professional, printed out a schedule, and took a deposit and signed a contract. The fair warning would be— to make sure to always get a contract even if just going with your regular stylist, especially if negotiating pricing and services not on their normal price sheets (travel, etc). It’s all about that contract !!

haha I considered doing my own make up for a brief moment and quickly realized I’d have to buy almost everything which would certainly be at least as much money as hiring someone! For some people there’s value in then owning the products but im the type who would never touch that primer and setting spray ever again, so, definitely wasn’t worth it for me!

If you’re going the DIY route, try buying your make up from someplace like Ulta. I’ve had good experience getting recommendations and color matching from them. And you can try the products and return them if they don’t work out.

Good advice and we found this to be true about a fair number of wedding-related issues/services, including DIYs. Daughter would have an idea about a project, we'd buy stuff to make it (usually buying more than we needed and spending MUCH more than we expected to) only for it to turn out "so-so" and/or she'd change her mind about wanting it at all. At first we thought DIYing all the florals would save a lot, but after doing good comparison shopping, she found a professional who did everything she wanted for a very reasonable price (e.g., beautiful rose & hydrangea centerpieces for $35 a piece, etc.). After the wedding was over, we still have unopened boxes of print-them-yourself invitations she changed her mind about, decor she didn't use, etc. I agree it's best to do REALLY through "homework" before you buy anything! Smiley heart

LOL yes. I realized I would end up spending way more on makeup when I went to buy some concealer that was $30 bucks a tube.

I'm sorry you went through so much hassle, but thank you SO much for passing on what you learned! I think it could really help others who might be on the fence about this.

I'm sure you'll be gorgeous and very happy with how it all turns out on your wedding day - which is SO SOON!!

Yep! The salon we're working with has been really great. I filled out a three page bridal contract after my consultation. Has all the info about timeline, party members and what services they're getting, even makes accommodations if we want to bring our own snacks or whatever.

I feel pretty good about it because I saw wedding hair and makeup getting done while I was there. Fingers crossed!

Yes I do think the hair should be included to this as well. My mother is doing my hair but she has done it before for prom etc. so I know she is good and I know she isn't flakey and I know no matter how much I piss her off she will still do it she just may pull extra hard lol but that is the exception to the rule. no one should assume they will be the exception.

Sorry to hear that Smiley sad. It’s still great advice though — anyone not willing to provide a contract is a non-starter. I’m sure I would’ve gone another way if they weren’t willing to provide one!!

It was one thing that went right without a lot of hassle for us! Everything has seemed like an uphill battle, but oddly, this went smoothly for us!
