Makeup artist vs Doing it yourself?

Brooke, on August 25, 2019 at 2:50 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 27
What is everyone’s opinion on paying for a makeup artist vs doing your own makeup? It would be nice not to have to worry about doing it myself but is it worth the money? Everyone in my area charges around $100 for the day of plus an extra fee for the trial run and I’m not sure if I should try to fit it into our budget or not. Any tips and opinions would be helpful!

I think it depends on a lot. For instance, your background on makeup, the makeup intensity/design you want, how much of a perfectionist you are or how important perfect makeup is to you, how your budget is, etc. I'm planning to do my own unless I find a great deal because I like the way I do my stuff and do my own makeup everyday, hair on the other hand I'm def having done professional!

I’m leaning towards doing it myself since my eyes are very sensitive and I can only use certain products, like mascara and eyeliner, etc.

Depends how good you are at doing it on your own and how elaborate of a makeup routine you want. I knew I wanted a pretty natural look and I’m half-decent at makeup so I just did it myself. I didn’t want to pay anyone and I honestly didn’t want to bother finding someone I trusted enough lol. I really wanted to make sure I looked like myself, and I only trusted myself to do that :p plus, most makeup brands make me break out so I liked getting to use my own products. I got tips from my mom who is a makeup artist and practiced a lot beforehand.

Yeah I can only use certain products too, and I feel like getting it done professionally would make me look so different. You looked so pretty! Did you do your own hair too or did you have it done?

I personally think that unless you're a MUA or have done makeup for professional pictures before, you should pay someone to do your makeup. One of the things our photographers strongly suggested, even for our engagement pictures, was professional makeup as it really stands out with their high resolution cameras. Just make sure that you see lots of examples of the artist that you decide to go with if you decide to do professional MU. It would be terrible to pay for makeup and you end up not liking it at all. And just for reference, I paid $125 for my trial and day of makeup will be $250, so I think $100 for bridal makeup is a steal!

All of the MUAs I've talked to are willing to use your brands for things like mascara, especially if you have sensitivity. However, a true professional should be experienced with all types of skin/sensitivities and be prepared for that.

Thank you! Yeah that’s what I was worried about too, I felt like if I was getting it done professionally I’d look very different unless I told them to just do very minimal then...... I could just do it myself lol. And nooo I could never have done my hair that well hahaha, a junior stylist from the salon I usually go to did my hair 😊

I’m paying someone, it’s only $65. I have bad eyesight and can’t really do my own eye makeup, I usually only wear lip balm most days. I don’t want to stress about makeup.

My mom is doing my makeup. She’s not a professional but does makeup well. I say if you are willing to learn to do it yourself to go for it!

Honestly I spent $170 buying my own makeup (foundation, powder, blush, lipstick, eyebrow stuff, liner, setting spray etc) when I was a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding. It’s worth the money to me to have someone else do my hair and makeup.

I can barely manage mascara and chapstick on my own. So obviously I’m getting my makeup done professionally. I did my trial the day of my engagement pics and it was worth every penny.

I do makeup as a hobby and feel I am pretty good (not to toot my own horn) & I was even considering do it myself too just to save money but my mom & FH brought up a good point that I’m going to be too nervous and overwhelmed to try to perfect my makeup and it’ll just stress me out even more. So I think I’m going to hire one just to take the pressure off and also I want makeup done for my bridal party as well

I am going to pay to have my hair done but am planning to do my makeup myself. I am planning on going for a more natural look so I think I could easily do it myself. If you want something more dramatic you may consider paying someone to do it professionally. Maybe there is a cosmetology school near you? A lot of time you can get these services for cheaper when you let a student do it.

If you already have high quality makeup that you want to use, I say DIY. If you need to go buy a bunch of nice products, it would be cheaper to get an artist.

A really good MUA will enhance your natural beauty instead of changing the way you look and they do it in such a way so that it translates beautifully in photos. Most people who do their own makeup fail to take into account the high resolution and lighting of photography and IMO look tired, washed out, or like they are not even wearing any makeup. For me, my wedding day is the day I am supposed to look my most amazing and it will be captured in photos forever. I paid a lot of money for my wedding and for my photographer so I wanted to look at those pictures and be 100% happy about how I looked in those pictures. Plus, it took the stress off me knowing that I am in capable hands.

I don't wear make up regularly so on my wedding day I don't want an excessive amount. My MOH wears make up daily and plays around with different ways to do eyeshadow so she'll just be doing mine. I'm planning to use a little concealer if needed, but not really any foundation because I hate how it covers my freckles

I wear makeup every day, and I would consider myself better at makeup than most people I know, but I am still choosing to have mine done because it’s my wedding day and it’s not every day you get to have professional HMUA done!! I also have a very specific color I am wanting and I know a pro can make that work better than me

My MAU is $270 for hair and makeup (one trial run included) of course I’m not very good at those things myself as it is, but I think just taking out the stress of things going wrong or running short on time makes it worth it!

I’m doing mine myself with the help from my daughter/mother. That’s because I’ve looked at several around my area and they are asking way more than I can pay.
