Makeup artist question- how to not be rude?

LemonadeSprings, on July 28, 2017 at 5:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

So I did my hair and make-up trial a couple of weeks ago and my wedding is in a week (so crazy!). I loved the way it looked right after she was done- looked as natural as wedding make-up can be expected and my eyelashes were amazing!

So here's the problem. Neither the hair nor the makeup lasted. I was out for about 3 hours after and by then, there was mascara all over my undereyes, glitter from the eyeshadow all over my cheeks, and no blush. The foundation had worn away from my T-zone and was creased under my eyes.

I do my own makeup every day and it lasts at least 10 hours with the aid of a good primer, a good powder and a good setting spray.

My question is: On the day of my wedding, is it rude to ask her to use the extra products to make it last longer? (con't in comments)

I was thinking something like- Hey I loved the trial but I noticed it seemed to fade after a couple of hours. Did you use all of the products your normally do? If not, do you mind if we add in my powder and primer to make it last longer? I've noticed that really helps my makeup with the staying power.

I'd have a conversation with her, honestly. I don't think it's rude at all.

I had to do the same thing. I snapped a selfie of me in the melted makeup, sent it to her with a note like, "Look at my gross problem-child face! This is my face's fault, but please bring some heavy duty shit the day of." She laughed and made adjustments. They're professionals. They won't be mad.

Your a walking advertisement of her work. She wants the honest feedback. If you don't look good then she doesn't look good. Ya dig? Absolutely bring this up to her. If you guys are on a texting basis then I'd even bring it up now so she can be prepared with the heavy duty stuff to make it last longer.

Definitely do it. My make up artists texted me later in the day to ask how things were holding up, as I had expressed to her my concerns about it lasting.

I'm definitely going to have her apply water proof day off. I told her that I get little sweat beads on certain areas of my face, plus I have oily skin. I was open and honest with her about all of my problems!

I would bring your fav products and ask her to use them. You're paying her to do what you want, remember? She won't be insulted!

I'd also consider asking her if she has a setting spray. As soon as the temp is over 85 degrees my body sweats from everywhereeeee. I'm like a human waterfall. I told my makeup artist and she's using a long wear primer and a long wear setting spray so I don't melt.

Thanks guys! My tendency to overthink and avoid offense at all costs means I rarely speak up for myself but I need to remember that 1. I am representing her so I should let her know any issues and 2. I am paying her for a service, not asking her for a favor.

She did use a good setting spray ( UD all nighter), but I am, like Jess, a human waterfall of sweat so it didn't stand a chance. I love, love, love my Laura Mercier Translucent Setting powder and I have heard it doesn't have flash back so I will ask if she can set the makeup with that.

When I had makeup done for the last wedding I was in, I believe she used some kind of spray to set the makeup. Not sure what it's called, but maybe mention that to her.

I used the Laura mercier setting powder combined with a drugstore setting spray and my makeup didn't budge!

    Hey Lemonade Springs!

Of course it's not rude to ask for more products. In fact, I would email her prior to your wedding and let him/her know your concerns so that they may have the products they need to accommodate you. When I have makeup trials with my brides, I always follow up with them to see how the makeup lasted and if they're any changes they would like to make. It helps the day of run so much smoother!

As far as your makeup lasting I would suggest the following:

    1. Use a foundation primer, plus setting spray

    2. Setting foundation primer with a light powder prior to application of liquid foundation

    3. Use a cream blush and powder blush to ensure longevity (or just a powder)

    4. Shimmer eyeshadows are more flattering for photography instead of glitter

    5. Use a hydrating eye cream, eyeshadow primer under the eye to avoid under eye creasing. Set or bake with a pressed or loose powder.

I hope these tips are helpful! Here's a link to a post if you want some other quick tips for long lasting makeup:

It's def not rude, you're paying for a service and should be happy. You received a lot of good suggestions and I'd only add to contact your hair/MUA BEFORE your wedding so she's better prepared to bring any additional products needed the day of. Be specific about your concerns.

@Lemonade, try the UD De-Slick setting spray! I'm an oily mess, and it works magic for me. The All Nighter is great, but to me, the De-Slick is next level.
