Makeup Artist...does this sound too expensive?

Mrs. Williams, on October 26, 2012 at 10:00 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 13

I am getting my makeup done through a salon. The salon is about 25 minutes from my parents house and I have decided that on the big day I will not be able to spare 50 minutes in travel time just to go there to get my makeup done. It was going to be $75 to get the airbrush makeup done at the salon. When I called to ask how much it would be to have someone come to my parents house to do it, they said it would be $225. So they are charging $150 extra to drive 25 minutes to my parent's house. Does that sound expensive to anyone else? I would expect to pay that much if it was someone who just specializes in makeup, but for a salon to charge $150 over the regular price, I just wasn't sure if that is normal. For now I am keeping them booked, but I am wondering if I should try to look for a different makeup artist. It would have to be one in the DC area though because there aren't many in the area that I live. So I would end up paying for them to travel about an hour and a half to 2hrs.

No, because now she cant book other people so you have to cover the time away from the salon. She could book another appointment during the drive time back and fourth to you.. . 25 miles is far enough, that could easily take an hour to 1.5 hours round trip. She also has to pack up and take her stuff from the salon which is more of her time. Now include gas.. Time is money.

I think its expensive just because you say its for a wedding they always up there price but they are not doing anything special and i think its so wrong for people to make you pay for on location especially if its close to you....i wanted on location so bad but refuse to pay that kind of money for someone to put make up on my face thats why im going to MAC i trust them i love there make it cost $50 and you get to keep the make-up

Ouch. MUA can get pricey but the $150 travel fee sounds outrageous. Hmmm, can you look around a little more?

If you are expecting a make up artist to travel that far to you then you should expect to pay alot then. You're paying for their time and services. Have you looked on this site using the vendor tool?

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to try to look into makeup artists in the DC/metro area since I am getting married about an hour and a half outside of there. I found a makeup artist who charges $250 and that includes the trial, and it is only $35 extra if you live outside of the DC area. I emailed them and hopefully they will be available. I forgot to mention that the other salon was also charging me for the trial ($75), so it was going to be a total of $300, and that was just for my makeup.

Lauren, if she doesn't work out. I'm also in the DC/Metro area. You can check out my website, it's on my profile.

    Good luck!

I am paying $250 (total) for two people to come to my room in Vegas to do my hair and makeup (airbrush). There were cheaper options (e.g. $180), but this place had better reviews.

As someone else mentioned, their drive time is time away from the salon and other paying customers... Plus the time it takes to pack up and paying for gas...

Update...I had to dig through about 3 pages of vendors on here, but I found a makeup artist in the same town as the one I was originally looking at. She will be doing my airbrush makeup for $120 and she doesn't charge a travel fee if she doesn't have to travel more than 40 miles, and since I only like about 20 miles away I was good to go. She will do the bridesmaid's makeup (not airbrush for them) for $30 a piece. Needless to say I cancelled the other appointment. The new makeup artist I am working with has a great portfolio and I really love her style. I am so excited!
