Make your own cake/cupcake?

Jacqueline, on October 17, 2019 at 3:34 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15
Is anyone planning to make their own wedding cake? Awhile back I took cake decorating class and I just had the bright idea to make our own wedding cake. And the cupcakes shouldn’t be that hard of a task either. Of course, baking/decorating may be the last thing I will want to be doing the days before. The savings alone has me really thinking I can do this 👍 Besides that, I can ask “my tribe” to make a couple dozen cupcakes too. Thoughts????

I didn't make my own wedding cake, but my mother-in-law made cake pops as our wedding favors. She had the help of my husband's sister and my bil's wife. They made them 4 days prior to the wedding and they were amazing. I think you could make your own cake or cupcakes if you really wanted to, but I know that is the last thing I would want to do right before my wedding. I had enough things I needed to get done without making cake or cupcakes. I was so thankful my husband's family were able to make the cake pops for us.

I was going to do this, but was advised not to. I've been making/decorating cakes my whole life. But I know very well that it can get pretty frustrating now matter how good you are and I don't think it's a good idea to add on the stress, especially if you'll have to depend on others to help who may not be able to when the time comes. I also would've practiced at least twice in entirety before the actual wedding cake, so I don't think it would've saved that much money. Not enough in my opinion when you consider the time and stress that comes with it.

It seems like a ton of extra stress and work to me, personally. We don't have a huge storage space besides our regular fridge, I don't know who would transport them & set them up & store them until the reception at the venue, I'm not sure how I'd go about food safety in our kitchen or how I'd deal with allergies.

It sounds like a lot of extra work to me, and relying on other's baking skills is pretty risky unless you have them all use a box mix. I would suggest getting at least a small cake done professionally for cutting/pictures. Then you could make your own sheet cakes for serving which would require a lot less decorating and prepping. Also, you'll need to make sure it's ok with your venue to serve food that is not made by a professional.

I should also mention my mil bakes all of the time for parties and things so she is used to make large batches of desserts. However, she never made cake pops before so for Christmas she made some to practice before the wedding. She wanted to make sure they were done right and that we liked them. She was going to make chocolate lollypops, but I was worried about them melting since we got married in July. Aside from the added stress, if you don't any experience making large batches of cupcakes or a wedding cake then it might not be a good idea.

Hmm...I think it’s a fabulous idea if you have a friend or family member who does a lot of baking and decorating! PPs right about the stress. You’re going to have more than enough stress on yourself without the cake/cupcakes—especially as you get closer to the day. You’ll probably also feel wiped/exhausted because I know wedding planning has sucked every ounce of vibrancy out of me. So, you might not want to overwhelm or over stress yourself with the cake/cupcakes. If you know someone else who does an amazing job and will do it for you at minimal or no charge, that would be incredibly awesome!

You didn’t run into any issues from your venue about bringing in your own? Awesome Definitely a question I shall be sure to ask.

Agree that the VERY first consideration is if you venue allows home-baked goods. Many do not, because of the liability. Second, unless people have already offered and your wedding is very casual/DIY (in terms of "everybody chipping in), I would not ask your "tribe" to make cupcakes. It is work, an expense, and potentially a hassle to transport them, that isn't really a "guest responsibility." Third, even if you an experienced baker, I'd think a lot about whether the work and stress are worth the potential cost savings (especially, if like a pp suggested, you're going to need to do at least one "run-through," to make sure you're prepared for the realities of baking your own wedding cake/cupcakes. Daughter shopped around, and she found a professional baker who would make and deliver her perfect cake for about $400 (for 100 servings; in a high cost-of-living/wedding area). The majority of estimates here were in the $6-10 a slice range. If cost is a major concern, I've seen posts on WW from brides who ordered Costco sheet cakes or Walmart cupcakes for very low prices. Unless you're having a very casual, DIY wedding, and are comfortable whipping up/storing/transporting however many cupcakes you'll need, I'd think through the costs and logistics of your plan before making a commitment.

I am a hobby baker so was kind of interested in doing this but the biggest deterrent aside from time was MESS. Baking is a messy endeavor and the last thing I wanted to be stressing in the days before my wedding was clean up!

I don't recommend this. Decorating cupcakes to look decent is easier said than done. Baking, building, frosting, decorating, transporting, and setting up cupcakes or a cake is easier said than done. You'd be better off using a small cutting cake and have the caterers cut up Costco sheet cake

My mom is making ours, and I am helping decorate it! I have celiac disease and don't want to have to be concerned with cross contamination or not being able to eat my own cake. We are going a little non-traditional because FH isn't a fan of a cake, but he does really like my moms chocolate fudge icing, and chocolate cake is my favorite. We are doing a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, vanilla with white icing, and then carrot with cream cheese, and strawberry with marshmallow. Smiley smile

I make cupcakes for large groups very frequently, and am not concerned.
