Major Problem

Stacey, on June 4, 2020 at 7:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

Covid had my fiance and I really worried about our wedding, but we talked to our venue and we will be able to have our wedding as planned. Where we live in Pennsylvania, they will be allowing gatherings of up to 250 people. We let our bridal party know when the announcement was made that we would still be having our wedding as planned. One of my bridesmaids reached out to me to let me know that she has a problem. She had her aunt who is a seamstress alter her dress so that she wouldn't have to pay for it to be altered. Now that it is altered, she has realized the dress doesn't fit properly. She had ordered the dress in a smaller size against my advice. She was hoping to lose enough weight. She is able to get it on and zipped, but it is tight and she feels really self-conscious. We don't have enough time to order the dress and have it altered so I don't know what to do. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? If so what did you do?

Would she be able to switch dresses with any of the other bridesmaids? perhaps someone else can fit into that dress and she can fit into theirs, etc?

Unfortunately, that wouldn't work. Her dress is a size 18. The others are 4, 10, and 14.

Can the seamstress let the dress out a bit?

She already did. The dress is rather form fitting in the hips, thighs, and butt so there isn't much room for it to be let out.

How tight are we talking? Would shapewear/span type things work? Otherwide, allow her to buy a dress off the rack if she can find the same color, length, or material? It might not match completely, but I’d rather have her feel ok and enjoy herself when she’ll be in front if people.
OR, can the seamstress incorporate something like a panel of same color as the dress lace down the sides or back that looks intentional snd would give some more room but still opaque?

It is tight, but I wouldn't say it's to the point that she has problems breathing in it or anything. Honestly, it kind of surprises me that she is complaining because she has always been the type to wear tight/revealing clothes. The seamstress said she would try to take a little bit more out, but she doesn't think there is much wiggle room left. I hadn't thought about adding a panel, but I can definitely suggest it. I just really wish more than anything that she would have listened to me when I told her to order the bigger size. I did tell her I would go with her to a local bridal boutique to see if we can find a dress that could match close enough with the other dress.

One of those options should work! Yeah, well, they always say it’s easier to take in than to take out, within reason, and to quote Stacey snd Clinton, ‘dress for the body you have now’. Good advice. Harder though if her body weight fluctuates, but I’m sure you will find the answer!

I would suggest adding a panel. That's really the only way to get around this without buying a whole new dress. I definitely understand your frustration with the size she ordered!
