Maitre D' Tipping?

SaraLep, on September 8, 2015 at 7:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

The tip for our Maitre D' is not included in our wedding. Our Sales Person said they recommend $1000.00 in cash. I feel like this is a lot. If our sales person was our Maitre D', I may feel differently since he has been working with us since October, but he is off that evening. Anyone have any recommendations? There is a vendor tipping cheat sheet on the knot, that says $200-300 for Maitre D'.

For informational purposes:

Our venue is in Northern NJ

Our cost per plate is $160

That does seem high to me - did they give you any other information? For example, are you also expected to tip all of the waiters/bartenders/other workers separately, or is the Maitre D' responsible for splitting that tip with those workers? Does the Maitre D' also fulfill other roles (like helping set up decorations, serving as a coordinator, etc)?

I would definitely double check those things before handing off a $1000 tip.

Our venue also suggested we tip our Maitre' D anywhere from $1000-$1200.

I feel like its a lot as well but I honestly also feel like Idk exactly what they do. someone who got married at our venue said they had the most amazing Maitre D who served as their DOC & basically made everything go smoothly. I still feel iffy.

    Our reception is un NYC

    Everywhere I visited recommended 5%.

And I honestly think they deserve it! Mine is basically a DOC. He's setting up all of my decorations, coordinating my vendors when they arrive and orchestrating my ceremony!

Uh, wow. I was thinking of tipping our DOC $300-500, and that is the biggest tip we were planning to give. She is maintaining our timeline, setting up decor, everything. We werent given tipping guidelines by our venue. I would also want to know if the maitre'd was sharing this tip with the waitstaff, as that would influence me to tip more.

Our recommended price is from $500-800 and that seems low to me. But, that's because this guy really has great reviews. I've read that he's done everything from setting up the venue to sewing some girl's bustle and following the brides with food and drinks.

We are also not being charged gratuity on our final bill. They're suggesting $40 per waiter. Most venues here charge a 20% of your total bill for gratuity.

The tip is included in the ++ of our plate (21% service charge), for the rest of the waitstaff. I'm sure this guy will be involved the DAY of, but like..I don't think $1000 is justified for 7 hours of work.
