Maitre d duties?

We've been looking at venues for a bit now, and we're leaning towards one that includes everything except a DJ and photographer. A Maitre d is also included. It's the first time we've heard the term and have a sort of an idea. What exactly do they do? Is it like a day of coordinator?

You would really need to contact to venue and find out what they consider to be the duties. Different places call things by different names, so I would call and check with them to be 100% sure.
