Mailing nonmachinable invitations

Jessica, on March 23, 2018 at 2:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Hi all! I just received my wedding invitations in the mail, and I had them printed in double thick cardstock, so they are super rigid. My invitation company told me I need to send them as "nonmachinable." Any idea how I do this? I know it will require extra postage, but is it as simple as just putting the extra postage on the envelopes and taking them to a post office? Or do I need to include some sort of marker on them that they cannot be put through a machine? The USPS website has not been very helpful in trying to figure this out (or, I am just not looking in the right place!). Thank you so much in advance for your help with this!

I have heard there is no such things as "hand canceling" no matter what they go through a machine as they dont sort by hand as it would take way to long.

Well, this is a little different that just requesting that my invitations be hand cancelled - due to the thickness of the envelope, the invitations literally will not fit through the machine and so they need to be processed a different way.

There are definitely pieces of mail that don't go through machines. You'll need to actually go into a post office, stand in line and hand the stack of invitations to a postal clerk explaining that they are non-machinable.

Go to the PO and ask to have them hand stamped.

Yeah my invitations had flexible wax seals, the "non machinable surcharge" stamp covers an extra ounce of weight and is a really pretty blue butterfly stamp...all I had to do was walk into the post off and hand them off, they knew what to do from there - based on stamp alone Smiley smile

Do you have to use that exact stamp, or can you just pay for extra postage?

I used it because it was the prettiest non machinable...I suppose you could just use 2 of whatever "forever stamp" if there's a specific one you want, but then you're paying way more postage than necessary and also it adds more stuff to the envelope than is necessary. I think the base non machinable stamp is 71 cents...

You're welcome! The other thing is the non machinable stamps actually say "non machinable" in little print on them, so if your invitations don't have something obvious- like my wax seal - that says "maybe no machine" then the stamp does.

I had the same situation. You just have to personally hand them off at the post office and let them know they are non-machineable. Depending on the postal worker they will stamp them for you. Our postage ended up being a total of $1.12 per invitation.
