Maid of Honor and Her Glasses

Stacey, on June 30, 2020 at 10:58 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11

My maid of honor just called me up crying because she doesn't want to wear her glasses to my wedding. Her one eye has apparently been bothering her so she went to the eye doctor's this morning and she was told she can't wear her contacts for at least two weeks if not longer because her cornea is scratched. My wedding is in less than two weeks which means she would need to wear her glasses for the wedding. Personally, I have no problem with her wearing her glasses. My parents, both of my future in-laws, my brother (groomsman), my future brother-in-law (groomsman), my future sister-in-law (bridesmaid), and my grandparents all wear glasses and are going to be in wedding photos so it's not like my maid of honor would be the only one wearing glasses. I tried telling her that I don't care if she wears her glasses because I think she is beautiful no matter what. She hates her glasses and doesn't want to wear them though. Without them she can barely see. She made the comment that she might wear them anyways. I don't want to her to cause further damage to her eye and I also don't want her eye to look irritated in wedding photos. I wear contacts so I know if my eyes are bothering me they look puffy, red or watery. I'm not sure what to do about this situation. Any advice?

I don't really think there's anything you can do. Her eyeballs, her choice. If she decides to ignore her doctor's advice, you can at least pretend her eyes are red and puffy from crying.

I think she should wear her glasses and when it's time for the "big" pictures - have her remove them if she's that self- conscious. As someone who wore contacts / glasses for years (I had lasiks) - cornea scratches are no choke. Wearing her contacts could cause more damage and now her eyes are red and swollen and can barely keep them open. Ultimately it's her choice, but I would hope she'd head her doctor's advice.

I like PP's suggestion of her taking her glasses off during formal pictures if that makes her feel better. That's about all you can really do for her.

I agree with Margaret. I'd suggest to her that she wear them, but remove them during photos if that will make her feel better.

Yeah pp's idea of removing them for photos is good!

I’ve had a scratched cornea before from contacts and it hurts like hell! If she really wants to wear her contacts the day of, I would tell her to keep taking her medicine they’ll give her to soothe her eyes and wash them with milk. She can always bring her glasses if her contacts fail her that day as well. Good luck!

Can’t she just wear one contact in the other eye that isn’t injured? No matter if she wears her contacts or glasses she won’t be able to see out of the other eye anyway so maybe she should just put the one contact in on her one good eye.

I agree with PPs just tell her she can take them off for the pictures and to wear them otherwise. I’m like her and hate me with my glasses but that’s probably the best compromise if she cant see anything without them

My dad is the same with his oxygen machine. He has that plastic nose tube thing on his face all the time and usually takes it off for pictures and puts them right back on. Like pp said, she could do the same for photos so she doesn’t further irritate her eye by forcing herself to wear contacts.

Simple. Don’t wear contacts if a medical professional says not too. Hopefully she doesn’t do any further damage. Corneas will recover quickly if given the right environment. Maybe she can have another doctor check in a 5-7 days and see if it is healed...?
